32x32 challenge - water castle

Post by stuifzand »

Well, this challenge was fun! I normally have the problem that I build my castles to big. Most of the time, that means my mocs never finish (a reason I don't publish that many mocs). So, I took the challenge, because I figured the restriction would work well on me. And I think it did :)

This time, I also had to start over a few times, but now I have a moc that is actually finished :raiseone:

The base of the castle is at a 32x32 base (if you want proof, here you have it), but my building mood wasn't over yet, so I build some landscaping around it.

As you can see, the dwarves are arriving at the castle for a trading session with the people in the castle. Some of them are welcoming them, and checking out the goodies :D

I had no idea how to call this moc, so it doesn't have a name
It's a water castle, and it isn't very well defended. I have this silly romantic idea of the medieval times, my guys don't fight....

Look who's checking the premises :halo:

Very nice castle and landscaping. I really like the details on the towers, as well as around the gate. Doesn't this kind of defeat the purpose of 32x32 though?

Nice build!! It does have a very romanticized/ peacetime feel to it. The thing I like the best are the cornors. The addition of windows in the roofs are expert.

Yes and no. Yes, because it isn't quite a 32 x 32 MOC. Adding all the extras takes away from the 32 x 32 outline. No, because the main focus of the challenge was to get people to build. Stuifzland said that it was challanging for her, and that is what is was about in a sense. That's the great thing about the challenge. Stuifzland can't be disqualified, because if wasn't a contest :D It's been a while since I recall seeing a Stuifzland MOC here at CC,....so mission accomplished.

Wowza! This is incredible!
I'm usually turned off by red roofs, but this one fits the whimsical feel perfectly. Great job!
Don't feel intimidated by publishing Works in Progress either, if you're comfortable with them.
I for one love to see other builders' methods, compare and contrast, etc. I followed the progression of Hrothingas Castle religiously.

Love the design, especially the towers. Reminds me of something out of Narnia, it kind of has a fantasy-ish feel to it. I also like the island and the landscaping, looks amazing!

Oh, by the way, the castle, wich is on a 32x32 baseplate with surrounding landscaping on it, can be taken out of the extra stuff I made.
So, it's simply a matter of what pictures I showed :)

This is great work as usual. My favorite details are the carved ornament over the main entrance and the colorful shutters next to the windows.

Yep, those shutters were the first thing I noticed too.

What a fantastic little castle!

I love the fact that you've accomplished so much over such a small area. Ignoring the landscaping and moat, the castle itself is incredible. Despite being so compact it really looks imposing. The different width on the back tower and the differing heights of each corner tower really add to the variety of this MOC. I love the fact that the rock edges surrounding the castle as well.

Conveying a sense of size over such a small area is a real challenge. This is one of the nicer castles I've seen this year. Great work.

You seem to have a peeping Tomasina looking through you windows! As mentioned before, the shutters really stand out. I wonder if it's because that's something that is quite often forgotten on castles? That bridge is really stand out too. This is a very nice fairy-taleish looking castle, to me at least.

Yeah, the 32x32 'guideline' was stretched to the maximum on this MOC and I'm quite surprised you were the first one to do it. Although I have to say that I was expecting a few MOCs to extend a little past 32x32 not, 64 studs! Your interpretation is interesting. :D

This is a great little castle. The rooftops are great and I love the windows being incorporated like that. I never would have thought to put up those rounded windows windows without an arch over them. Hiding the stud under the red round 1x1 plate looks wonderful.

The fish sculptures over the entrance are money! What is even more money is the 50 dollars worth of 75 degree 2x2x3 double convex slopes you have in this MOC. I count 38 of them. That is impressive all by itself! Many don't appreciate the cost of rarer pieces especially when used in quantity in a creation.

Thanks for posting this. It has opened my mind.

This is definitely an interesting little castle, which seems small given its 32x32 boundaries, but at the same time has an incredibly large feel to it. There is a familiar as well as unique design to the castle to the point that it held my attention for a long time as I tried to figure out why I felt like I had seen it before. Otherwise, I enjoyed how you used those green vine-like pieces as some sort of rising plant. Well done...

I absolutely love the romantic fantasy look of this castle. Beautiful! The shutters and windows are very nice, and I like the L-shaped red roof a lot, very nicely built. I like the look all that foliage gives the scene, like the castle has been there awhile. I find many MOCs look like newly built houses on a bare plot of land and I think you managed to fix that impression for me here, I'll have to remember that. The crenellations (not sure how to spell that) really sell the castle 'feel' even if they serve no logical purpose, so I love them.

Also as a side note, my 17 month old especially enjoyed your MOC because it included ducks. You got her vote.
