Classic-[Insert New Name Here].com?

Post by Athos »

Lego appears to be looking to change the name of the Castle theme:

http://brickset.com/news/article/?ID=409

That seems really silly to me.

Edit: Deinonychus from eurobricks has provided the options and current results of the poll:

I'm glad to see Lego Castle is in 2nd place. And I guess Lego Kingdoms, isn't terrible and it could encompass Ninjas, Arabian Nights, etc.

Lego appears to be looking to change the name of the Castle theme
Read it again, emphasis on the word "thinking".

The Castle theme has been under plenty of name changes before, so this isn't too worrying at all. Ninja, Vikings, Knights Kingdom- all have been the Castle theme with a different name and a few extra letters, yet still having the very characteristics of the theme itself.

Also, i'll have "Lego: Medieval Ages" please.

Meh. I hope they don't change it. Again(?) And I didn't like Ninja, Vikings, or Knights Kingdom, so that hardly makes me feel any better :)

"Town" was changed to "City" and that works fine for me because the name lends itself to a grander scale, IMO. If they feel that they must change the name of the theme from "Castle" to something else, I'm in agreement with Athos that "Kingdoms" would work in that it could cover more than just the normal castle type sets we usually get. TLG loves to speak of their 'core values' and such so why change this to something that may sound different than what we've had going for the last 30+ years?

They really could just shake up the theme by offering something different every couple of years instead. Perhaps they could do a feudal Japan series for a couple of years, go back to regular castle for four years, do something 'historical' with a crusader (as in the crusades, like a tan/desert colour palette) theme for two years, then go back to Europe and so on....

it does not matter hiw will they call it, as ong as they treat us with fantasy candies like elves, shadows, angels, demons

good guys (and the bad ones) could get new celestial allies, just think of ideas of armor with wings and helmets with horns ( small ones, as a single part), celestial cities on skies or forteres with lava flowing trough

and let all be called "Lego Fable"
or just keep "Lego Fantasy"

or the best one: "Lego Fable Legends"

so all those misticall creatures will be logical follow up from Castle and Fantasy era, and kids (and us:) can bring all figurines together and play :)

I was so dissapointed with Fantasy era setsa in 2009. But, I was extatic with Fantasy era sets from 2008.

I so much need some good suprise, and I do not care what will they call it :)))))

I think Kingdoms is more a social political construct than is necessary. The Castle theme name implies construction and a common theme around the world of fortresses. IMHO, they should leave it be as the link to brand identity and the history of the theme will be a asset to the line.

I think if you look at the retail slowdown of the current Castle line as being their impetus for a name change, then what they really need to be asking is not the question of the name, but rather the product inside the box. Less of the machines of war and more of the life around the castle with some conflict elements thrown in for good measure of fun. Retail should have gotten the Medieval Market Village set, not the Ogre Fortress if they wanted to drive some sales along. Build up the main forts with some constructions to embellish it.

I'd go for just about any historical location and timeline withing the theme of Castle as it pertains to fortresses and fort towns. :)

I think they should leave it be. That being said I don't really care what it's called as long as long as I'm still getting my bricks.

I hope this does not end in a disaster like Knights kingdom. I think Lego Castle is fine but if they must change it then call it something like Lego Fantasy or Lego Quest, I dont know, but I think Lego Castle is fine and they should keep it otherwise I'll be angry  .

I agree that the name change is not necessary for a core theme. Instead they could easily keep the "Castle" logo and add graphics of a new faction's shield. Another possibility would be to change the box color (perhaps to 1980's yellow/orange sun backgrounds) while retaining the Castle name. This would please retailers who get new looking boxes while preserving the overall name of a core theme. They aren't changing LEGO City to LEGO Metropolis, LEGO Suburbs, etc so why change Castle?

Space (another evergreen theme) changed it's name constantly through years so Castle could change too. But I prefer status quo, Castle is good enough. Kids doesn't seem to be agreeing with me though.

Hi all,

Steve Witt from TLG said this was priviliged information so it shouldn't have been made public. Brickset removed the alternative names from their web site so I think we should do the same here.

The potential names for the Castle theme have been removed. Please see the Classic-Castle.com Terms of Service regarding leaks: http://www.classic-castle.com/tos.html

It is acceptable to continue discussing the possible name change, but not the leaked names. Thanks.

Alright, well this is at least interesting. A sad thing to see 'Castle' possibly leave us, but if this means a continuation of the theme, I can live with letting the name evolve.
