I don't know if this will help, but I use Windows XP. I am not certain I understand Sparhawk, as I stink at technology. I have the technological knowledge of someone born in the forties.

Just for the record, I said I am NOT having this problem. This thread is the first time I've ever been made aware of it.

I can see it happen here aswell (IE 8.0.6001.18702) on Windows XP Professional
What I have just tried is make a message where I don't use the <enter> key inbetween sentences and let IE wrap the text in the input box, this seems to cause the problem here on my side. When I use <enter> after each sentence, then I seem to be able to generate a message that runs way out of the input box, without the strange scroll/jump behaviour. Maybe this helps in finding/solving the problem.

I just tried doing that and had no problems. This was on my work computer though and they haven't upgraded from Windows 2000 Professional. I have XP at home and will try it tonight.

Internet Explorer version 7.0, I think. One other thing, it only does it on Classic-Castle. My family types stuff on both computers all the time, but it only happens here.

I'm not sure what the issue is, but I'm doing some investigating. It isn't a widespread issue, so it may be impossible to pinpoint.

I think I've been able to recreate this, or at least something similar. I pasted a lot of text into the text area for posting a reply, and when I had more text than the area can hold - when scrollbars appear - every letter i type causes the scrollbar to "jump up" to about the middle of the text. The cursors still stays at the bottom, though, so I can go on typing, but I can't actually see what I type.

Okay, I knew I shouldn't have done that, because I'm one of those people who can't see something like this without knowing why. In other words: I'm on it.

Seems to be a bug in Internet Explorer 8 that causes this behavior when the textarea size is set by CSS. Forcing IE8 to emulate IE7 should take care of it - I see some other forums do this, and I don't have the problem there. Add this:

I am the family tech support. And if any member of my family wants my help with anything related to the internet they use Firefox. Toms Hardware did a comparison of the different browsers and IE came in dead last. Firefox didn't do as well as I had hoped, but it has a lot of features that people are accustomed to if they are moving from IE. And a lot of websites will make sure that they display correctly on IE & Firefox(but not the other "better" browsers like Chrome). If you are a tech geek, then I'd suggest Google's Chrome, even though I don't use it.

Chrome is fast and has some nice features. I don't use it because I have heard that it tracks your activity more than any other browser - there are some serious privacy concerns with it.

I also believe Firefox is safer in general, but I might be biased there, I confess~

Not really. Some are very much IE heavy and will only work 100% of the time if ran from IE(not even the IE tab in Firefox will fix that). This is because they either are using MS only tech, or are taking advantage of IE's inability to render pages according to established specs(Facebook works better on IE than any other browser). Other browsers will conform 100% to the industry specs, so page designed with those specs in mind for greater compatibility will look and function better on those browsers(IE scores about a 60% on the W3C spec tests, and Firefox an 85% on those same tests). Websites like this one that use an open source app for page management will more than likely try to meet the latest W3C standard. So you will want to use browsers that score higher on those tests(like Chrome).

Chrome only tracks what you type in the quick search box, no matter what the search engine you use. And supposedly it is only used to build Google's search stats. So it acts just like what happens when you go to a search page, which is what Google originally is and still pays for most of its bills with.

I believe it's a bit worse than many people might think... there is a lot of "linking" to other accounts you have, etc etc... and even if you type something into that location bar and then delete it (without pushing 'enter') it still track that... a lot of stuff like that that makes me feel a bit uneasy, but I might be behind on things there. I don't let anyone at the company I work at use it - only IE or Firefox.

Sorry to distract from the main conversation though... I find browser tech interesting.

What I was trying to say was that site developers should always strive to make their page work as well as possible in any/all browser(s). Not that everyone actually does..

Google made a deal to share information with the NSA and Eric Schmidt has a lot of government buddies. Point being, yeah. I think the tracking goes a little beyond just building search stats.

Back on Topic, I think Firefox is the all-around best browser on Microsoft Windows. It's not perfect in any regard, but it does everything well.

Regarding the bug, I agree that this site (and all sites) should work in all modern browsers. (That usually means, FF, Safari, Chrome, Opera, IE6, IE7, IE8) I have an XP computer that I rarely use. I'll try to check it out after work and see what I can see.

I still have the jump-scroll problem. I have done everything possible to fix it, from changing my virus protection to trying all the different ways to type messages. A really negative feature in this problem, is the fact that I can't highlight. It gets really frustrating, especially since I am a long-winded person. I've noticed that it seems to go to the middle of the scroll-bar lately. For example:
