This was one of my first sets. It has a nice variety of weapons and accessories, 2 minifigs, horse, and anicely built wagon.

I might be reading this incorrectly, but are you suggesting that the crossbow first appeared in the Pirates line? I don't remember this, and so I checked Bricklink. I can't see any Pirates sets included in the list of those containing crossbows (link). There are three Castle sets from 1990 with crossbows, which is where I first encountered them (6018-Battle Dragon, 6081-King's Mountain Fortress, 6059-Knight's Stronghold). Do you remember what Pirates sets had crossbows? My curiosity has been piqued.
