Rebuilding Original Sets in Brown

Post by Redav »

I had been wondering lately whether it's possible to build 6054, 6066, 6067, and 6071 and other black vehicles (for example 6030 or 6061) with brown bricks.

I had a bit of a look through Peeron and I'm not sure that all pieces from 6054 are available in old brown (i.e. http://www.peeron.com/inv/parts/2462), is this the colour you would try and use (I'd have thought so)?
I guess it wouldn't matter if there's other colours in there to make up for the unavailable ones?
Would you swap all the black for brown or is there some black that could stay because it may not be wood?
Regarding the brown pieces, what's the best method of getting these? Can you get bulk pieces for bricks, slopes etc or would you have to get specific sets and Bricklink etc the rest?

I know that most people have moved on from building the original sets but part from this example (Forestmen's Hideout Redux), has anyone else tried doing this?

I have already tried to figure out how to rebuild "wooden" sets. I think some parts are meant to be stone in the designer's mind, so the example you show with the forestmen's hideout is nice but not exactly like the original set. The "turret" have to keep gray or stonelike colored. This ads the question of wether a real tree can or cannot carry such a stone-built thing, or if just part of its trunk is a stone fake, or even if it is a full stone building covered over by vegetation. I have already seen vegetation climbing over vertical stone wall, and trees growing off stone turret's top, so the last possibility makes sense to me.
For the camouflaged outpost, the main part has to keep stonelike because it is supposed to be an underground building.
Sometimes, wooden buildings can be painted black, so black just fits nice for these. Look at the "tudor" wall panels, does anybody ever complained about their wood part beeing black?

I must be melanophobic. I have progressively been eradicating my black parts and replacing them with various browns, and currently none of the MOC's I am working on have any black in them, save the lattices and roofing slopes (after some debate over if I should attempt a different, cheaper roofing solution).

TLC never seems to be able to practically color all their bricks, so please, do the work for them aye? Let's face it; how many things in the natural world are black? Trees, stone, spears/axes, even roofing slopes? I think not.

Black wood, black metal, black stone and black tiles are pretty common. Black Walnut trees, iron, obsidian, slate could all be called black.
LEGO brown, old or reddish, is a much stranger colour for a tree.
...and that's how Equestria was made!

I'd suspect that I'd be the same but I'm keen on giving it a go (assuming most of the bricks are available)

Thanks for posting. That's a lot more brown than I was thinking. I'd only be swapping the black tree stuff for brown and retaining grey stone and black that wasn't tree.

Not the stone cut from quarries to build castles, or at least I haven't seen such a structure in real life or in pictures that could truly be considered black. Perhaps through weathering, they could resemble black, but just as "black" and "white" people aren't actually black or white, there aren't many things in nature that are inherently black. As for browns, numerous natural things are a shade of brown, like dirt and bark... h_ll, even spilt blood turns brown after it dries.

Nothing against black, really, but IMO, TLC really employs entirely too much black in their sets. Dark brown is definitely an advancement for them though; I cannot wait to see it implemented in more sets in the future.

Are you implying that brown is a strange color for a tree?

Those were just examples. There are other dark stones that can be quarried. I know I've seen some pics of castles with very dark stone, and the fact is that LEGO colours will always be relatively limited, so selecting colours will always be an issue of approximation.

LEGO brown, yes. If you look at real trees they are generally rather grey, actually.

Hmm I suppose. Now that you mention it real trees are a bit grey. I'm still not sure though. The problem with black and Lego trees is there is only one real shade of black. This can make trees and buildings around them rather confusing. I think dark Lego brown is the best color for the trucks of trees. But that might be just me :?
