Andrastavia Gone Forever?

Post by Sir Zeppelin »

Has anyone been able to access Andrastavia latley? Every link I have come across brings me to the Oops! Cannot find server thing. I can get to the chapter that Anthony and Kevin wrote together, but that is it.I would like to access the site because Kevin Hall has so much cool stuff on there, but I have not been able to find a good link. Does anyone have one?

When I searched it, it said that it does not exist or is not available. :(

I actually have the entire story saved to my hard drive, so I guess it will never be completely lost, if it comes to that. :)

I'm pretty sure I've got it saved as well. What are the ethical implications of taking someone's work like that and putting it back up on the web? I'd hate to see that lost forever.

If I got the right URL for the original, some of it seems to be up in the Internet Archive... full link to the Andrastavia pages = http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www ... xtra2.html.

I don't think it's the same ethically as another fan putting it up, they're more like google, but I thought that archive might be of interest anyway. :)

THanks for the link, Cdr.Dontra. I've been wanting to acess the website for a long time; Kevin Hall has a lot of cool stuff on there.

I mean the idea of creating sort of an internet museum - saving the data from whole sites of some of the great builders who have left the hobby and posting them all somewhere. Without permission from the creator, I don't think you can really do that, but it is a shame when some of these have left the hobby altogether, or even passed away. For instance, it seems that Erik Brok's family has maintained LEGO on my mind - if they hadn't, his work would be lost to anyone who didn't have them saved on their personal hard drive.
As Cdr.Donatra points out, though, there is always the Wayback machine or similar web archives.

Yes, but these archives are not complete, and are frequently not user friendly as links and images sometimes don't work. The system is a bit haphazard.

If their website's server has died and they've made no attempt at restoring it, it's doubtful they have much interest any more. And besides, they put the site/work up originally so it's not like you'd be doing anything they hadn't done already.

This is something I've thought about for a long time - especially when doing Castle World (the forums, not the original). Even if there is no profit or money changing, I do believe there is some sort of ethical question that needs to be answered along the way if it's put up by someone else and shared en mass.

The worst part is, many writers/builders who leave are often hard to contact after they go into a dark age, so getting permission (or even making contact) can be difficult.

That would be neat if such a website existed. Something like one page full of links to the sites. There would be complications, though. Contacting the site's owner, getting the site back online, etc. Still, it would be a cool thing to see. Thanks for your help, everybody.

Oh my, I'm just so overwhelmed by excessive nostalgia I'm not sure what to say :D

For now I'll just bid you welcome back, and make sure I get some time off to look at this again..
