what do you think?

Post by theboywarrior »

Okay, I've heard that the Dragon Knights of the Kingdoms theme are a remake of the Dragon Masters from the mid-nineties. is this true, or just speculation??? :raiseone:

Hmmm, what do I think? I think your subject heading could be better than "what do you think?". Perhaps something descriptive of what is inside the message?

Any such connection is purely up to your imagination. I doubt the LEGO company would even remotely consider Dragon Maters when considering the new lineup. Besides, the Dragon Masters' prominent point was that they actually controlled dragons-- but there aren't any in the new Kingdoms sets.

As I understand it, LEGO themes these days are largely based on concept artwork-- they hire some artists to do some images of a castle-themed world, and they discuss and refine them gradually, eventually developing more and more what the theme will look like. While they may use inspiration to create that vision, I highly doubt that past LEGO themes would play much of a role.

However, fans have been imagining connections between LEGO castle themes for a LONG time. I remember seeing people's stories on Usenet posts from 1994, I believe-- back when Dragon Masters were still new! Back then, people had all sorts of theories about how the Dragon Masters evolved from the Black Knights, how they interacted with the Crusaders and Black Falcons, and so-on-and-so-forth.

The great part has been when LEGO has left little "clues" that connect the dots. Dragon Masters and Black Knights had similar oval shield designs-- Royal knights and Knight's Kingdom featured a very similar lion head. And Forestmen and Dark Forest had identical heraldry. I don't believe LEGO's ever intended them to indicate a particular storyline or connection. My guess is it's been about money-- they already have artwork and printing ready (maybe even leftover parts), so they re-use something older. But it's fun as a hobbyist to invent a storyline that uses these as "hints" as to what might have happened.

LEGO has never intended any "over-arching" storyline. The original sets were left intentionally vague to encourage imagination, although gradually each faction began inheriting distinctive characteristics (but no story). Since 2000, each castle subtheme has had its own microcosm of a story, that's not really intended to connect to other castle themes that LEGO has done. But that shouldn't stop you from imagining your own storyline.

My thoughts on this are similar to davee123 in that there is only a connection if you want one to be. LEGO lets each fan create his/her own story by not having a detailed explanation of each faction's relationship to one another. I don't have any relation between the Dragon Masters and the Kingdoms Dragons because that's how I want it for now. Other fans may think differently and the possible explanations could be endless.

Royal knights and Knight's Kingdom featured a very similar lion head.

actually, I think King Leo and Cedric the Bull were sons of the Royal Knights king, that was part of the storyplot for KK1.

Sorry about the emoticons.

I'm always interested in the actual bits of storyline that Lego puts out, but this a new one to me. Where did you come across that?

Do you mean this page? If so, the article claims that "The king and his forces were pitted against an army of barbarian invaders commanded by Cedric the Bull." I don't see any reference there to King Leo and Cedric the Bull being related.

Yes, but anybody can 'contribute information' to those pages; it doesn't make it fact. Don't let the wiki mind bend you.

I'm with Ye Olde Republic on this one. Any non-referenced material on a publicly written wiki is suspect.

Assuming the picture here is really of Cedric the Bull, I'd say that it's unlikely he would be King Leo's brother. The family resemblance is not strong.

I agree with this statement. But I also believe that Lego has been consciously harking back to earlier motifs: Crownies, Lions, Dragons, set 6103, maybe even the partitioning of the heraldry -- it doesn't seem like these are just random, new themes. But whether the current Dragons or Lions are the same faction as the former, that's just up to whoever happens to be playing with the toys.

Seems like "Lego Castle Sets" might be the place for the thread, since only existing castle sets and themes are under discussion.

I am honestly enjoying the attention I'm getting from this...but who doesn't enjoy attention?
Does anyone own said storybook mentioned in that article on Cedric? If so, it could shed some light on this situation...

*EDIT*
So no one misunderstands me, I'm NOT asking about the book because I want it, and I didn't want attention from this, just an answer to my question, and possibly another interesting discussion.
