Post by architect »

Join the weekly Classic Castle set review discussion. Please post your opinions on the set play ability, piece selection, design, etc. Which sets stand up to our catapult of critique and which ones crumble in shame!

This week’s set is 7041 Troll Battle Wheel.

This wheel driven siege machine was released for the Trolls in 2008

Three crown soldiers defend their spike covered battlement with a catapult. Two trolls propel the giant siege wheels. A third troll controls the siege tower and its' firing projectile.

Various accessories such as a banner, pikes, troll swords, crossbow, shields, sword, and flags are included.

That wall stands no chance. This is a pretty neat set, very strange, but neat. I can see and understand people scoffing at this set, but I like it. Plus there are a lot of those dark brown plates. :D

This set (or the difficulty in finding it) is one of the many reasons I wish I'd come out of my dark ages when the Fantasy Era castle sets were still available (well aside from the Medieval Market Village).... I don't know if I'm the only one, but as soon as I saw a pic of this set, the first thing that came to my mind was that this thing would make a great Skaven Doomwheel.....

Capt. Edmund Blackadder: "So, you're telling me that your father was German, you're half-German and you married a German?"

What a weird set. Can't really say much mor ethen that. A giant couple of wheels attached to each other, run by three orcs/trolls/whateveryouwanttocallthem, to run over a speedbump guarded by three Crownies seems to be the premises of the set.

Three figs are nice, and lots of useful pieces. Playablity is high, but still can't make much sense of the set.

7/10

The set itself is cool, the design of the wheel is brilliant, and would terrify me if I were on the opposing side, however, how the heck are they gonna stop?

Its kind of a silly set. And the trolls are facing the wrong way...

But its got a lot of dark brown, though I wish they had more variety in parts.

The build was pretty dull and tedious too... Two identical wheels with the same build on each facet of the ring...

No they're not. The trolls are retreating. Kind of sad that the one crownie hasn't realized this and is still running the opposite way.

Agreed, though. 'Tis a silly set. About the only thing it had going for it was that at the time, IIRC, it was the best way to get a few troll figs relatively cheaply. I may be wrong, but I think that this came out before the single troll impulse set and the 5-fig battle pack.

You're right. This was one of the (if not THE) first troll sets available, not including the two figs that came with the Dwarves' Mine. I got it when it first came out, and had to wait awhile before I could meaningfully add to my orcish horde.

I Think the Trolls :orc: probably had the best siege weapons of all factions and this set is just one example of that.

This set was so polarizing when it first came out. It's just so absurd it's fantastic! Besides, nice lot of brown 2x6s.

The creativity of this set has no ends. I love the rather original design in the kit but I don't really like the almost foppish silliness involved. The pieces are definitely a plus, mainly the dk brown plates and dk grey tiles. Both are excellent for us castle types. The figs are also a perk. This is one of the rarer sets where there are the same number of figs in the factions.

It's kind of cool, definitly creattive and original if not a bit tacky. Although I have no idea why the troll warriors are acting like hamsters though :D
