Death of the old Count

Postby GillesGaer » Sat Jun 11, 2011 6:48 am

The old count has fallen on field of battle. Two of his sons and men from his retinue bring him to his final resting place, the church of the Holy Trinity built by his crusader ancestor.

Dear all

It has been quite a time since my last post here. Thing is, I've been building a real life house since last year, ate up a good deal of my time. Then I've been mostly lazy to finish up this moc and post pictures. Anyway now you can see it. I meant to emulate some of the builders I like in order to improve my building skills and add details to my plainish mocs. Credits to Rhox (for the general idea of the church and part of the design of portals), Eilonwy for the stained glass (a note there: they are held by tape. I could build them individually, they hold, but when I try to integrate them all in the church... well... it's too frustrating :) after building them twenty times I just gave up), Luke Watkins and probably a lot I can't remember.
I want to take additional pictures, I'm not too happy with the ones I've made so far. Any comment or suggestion to improve them is very welcome - that's why I am posting "unfinished" pictures in the first place.

Cheers

The inside of the church along with all of the stained glass windows are really nice.
You would rather be building right now.

Looking at this church makes me want to demolish the simplistic Romanesque church I've been working on hitherto... it appears this is even more splendid than I ever thought such a church could look! Even if the stained-glass wasn't your idea, I will note I love the concept! I've been trying to figure out what to do for that so now I have some ideas... The crucifix above the alter is magnificent! I was thinking of doing something similar, although likely in a wood tone..

Overall, gorgeous! If you are looking for suggestions for pictures, I might say, try to get some with some natural sun light. I've found that no light bulb can possibly capture the true beauty of a creation the way the real sun does; like the way real buildings are externally lit, so should MOCs! 8)

The design of the church is very thoughtfully done. I also really like the layout of the rocks along the base.

Thanks for your comments!

I'll try photographing it outside. It's what I used to do before but this time the Moc is not quite portable... which reminds me of two weeks ago when a friend of mine came home while I was building a display (in an i**a shelf) for my brand new imperial flagship. The display was finished, the ship sitting on top of another bookshelf, I wanted to quickly put it in the display, hold it on both ends and... bye bye imperial flagship! No need to say that it takes quite some time to find all the parts scattered in the room... not sure I want to look for 800 cheese slope of this moc ;-)

Hi,

I just found this, but I wanted to say that I feel honored that you emulated my style for the windows. They look quite nice! I completely understand about the desire to use tape. I've wondered about making a large window without a clear backdrop to hold it into place. I think if I ever had to do it, so that you could see large, complicated windows from both sides, I'd make it three layers thick. The middle layer would be clear bricks, and then I'd do the design two times (once backwards). That way it might hold in place. But I once sent a little window to Guy Himber for his cabinet, and he asked if he could tape it, and made a convincing argument that tape is okay. Of course, there are other people out there (ahem, at twee affect, ahem) that would have a completely different opinion, and say that unless everything was connected and shake-proof, it's WRONG. ;-)
