Random MOC's of mine(ish)

Post by Redav »

Okay, I figure that it is about time to share something seeing as though all I've done is check out others wonderful MOC's. I kinda feel silly putting a disclaimer as I've found this forum quite accepting of peoples varying levels of MOC's etc but I don't have many pieces, much skill or as much time as the usual high standard of postings on here and generally speaking, I like building stuff that's similar in scale to the clasic sets (speaking of which, I only own 'golden age' sets so flamboyance is at a minimum :) ). I do hope one day I can build something more substantial.

Anyway, with that off my chest, here's some pics. Nothing grand, just some stuff I've tinkered with over the last little while. I'm sure half of you have probably built something like these before and there's clearly two that are basically modified original sets (no points for guessing which ones). Most of it's modular as my present aim is to acquire enough pieces to lay out a castle that appears in a book I used to read when I was younger (Usborne's Knights and Castles). I then hope to build something from the Lone Wolf books (by Joe Dever) and who know's what when. In the mean time I just tinker with what I have and try and acquire more sets.

Here's a few thumbnails;

Comments are welcome. If anyone would happen to see some more photos, let me know as I have some other angles.

That rounded tower is really well done! I love the architectural design on it.

I left a comment on your Flickr, but I just wanted to say that I like your designs a lot. Can't wait for you to expand your collection so that we can see what you can do with a few more bricks available! I like your "classic" building style :)

Nice. Your MOC's really have that old Classic Castle look and I like it.
I tried myself to get the same look in building a large scale Yellow Castle, but sadly it just ended up too much yellow and too little Classic Castle to it. :(

Ta. When I started it I wasn't too sure it was going to look too good. I felt it might be a bit too angular but I think in the end it fits in well with the classic style. I had originally started with a tower based on hinges but I don't think I had enough and it was going to be a bit too big.

Thanks. I had seen a few nice bridges on here and wondered if I could build something that almost fits in with the classic size. It sort of turned out as I had thought about it and when I get the pieces, I'll try increasing the size of the fortification. I used black because I didn't have enough grey. I guess in a way it allows the fortifications to stand alone. Maybe I should have had its foundations grey too?

Yup, saw that thanks. I have another wall piece to put up. It's just a straight bit with two dungeons 'borrowed' from the design in the Knights Castle set. I hope I get to expand my collection soonish. The problem that I'm facing is that I'm loath to break up these ones

Ta. For the moment the classic look is all I can probably build so I think I'll stick with it for a while. I think I've seen a grey version of that castle too. I'd imagine that it gets to a point when the yellow just becomes too much. I wouldn't mind trying to build larger versions of the Kings Castle or a few others but I guess we'll see.

Redav, there's no need to be so modest about your MOCs. Your work stands well enough on its own. In fact, as far as MOCs that recreate the spirit of classic-castle go, these are very fine examples! The octagonal tower in particular captures both the classic look of the 1980s while being innovative and eye-catching.

We all build in our own way, and we are all growing as MOCers. I feel confident saying that you have a nice building style that will only grow as you continue to build. Your builds show a maturity and design sensibility that is not easy to develop. I look forward to seeing what you come up with next as a modular castle in classic style would look wonderful.

The fortified bridge looks really nice for being so simple, the bridge itself looks sturdy, yet elegant. Keep up the good work.

Much to the amusement of the wife, I've been tinkering again. This isn't complete but it is where it is at for the moment.

Initially I thought I'd upgrade the gatehouse with something that was inspired by Micklegate in York and Westgate in Canterbury and I wanted to build on the portcullis from the Kings Castle. I didn't intend on finishing the roofline like this but it happened after demolishing the Tall Tower and wondered if I could incorporate the roof. When I get some more pieces and time, I'll upgrade the barbican and I think the walls will be closed in to look more solid. I think this might end up being an intermediate upgrade as I'd probably like to bring things up to a size that is similar to the wall towers that I'd built.

Anyway, here's some pics.

These look like they came strait out of a 1980s lego catalog. If you had told me that these were the preliminary images for a few unreleased lego sets I would have bought it hook line and sinker. As it stands, they're very nice, and as well as looking like the old sets they make me nostalgic for bygone days. Thanks for posting these, they really are fun and interesting MOCs.

No modesty required indeed, these are great 80s style MOCs, they fit right in with the sets I grew up staring at in the catalogs :D

Usually I do not prefer panel build castles, but your gate is great. 3 studs arches are small jet, breaking monotony of panels well. Good job.

Ta. That's the vibe I'm aiming for. I too would stare at the catalogue's and year books wishing for stuff. I think (actually, I know) I've acquired more sets in the last two years than I did when younger.

Yeah, I understand why they aren't that popular these days. I'm short for bricks so I still use them but I'm going to close them in to give walls more depth and hide the inside face. The arches are small but I used them to reflect the original set style of windows from the Black Falcon's Fortress set. Untimately I'll rebuild it with doorway arches (and hopefully no panel pieces) where minifigs can fit however funnily enough, doorways in castles were usually a tight affair but at the moment the only 4 wide arches I have are black ones from the Camouflaged Outpost. I'll need to Bricklink them I think but that'll wait till I sus out the brown pieces I want. I also hope to fit in a few arrow loops but I'll have to sus out a style that fits and suits the model.

I think that you'll find that there are a lot of great ways to approach castle building. The most modern techniques of the AFOL community involve things like SNOT and the like, but I think there is something to be said for classic style building as well. Your work already looks like a great take on the 1980s era sets; I compliment you on them and hope that you'll put together a large display for us.

I'm loving the look of this gatehouse. As others have mentioned, it has a true classic feel to it, and let me echo the sentiment that you shouldn't put yourself down for this. Many of us became enamoured with Lego because of the classic castle sets, and replicating their feel invokes all of those old memories. Well done!

I also like the fact that the gatehouse is asymmetrical. I wonder, however, if you've given any thought to adding a further storey to the section on the right, i.e., the part with the black roof. This might give even greater contrast because not only would you have asymmetry in how the towers were topped but also in their height. I don't know if it would work--indeed, it might look like crud--but I toss the idea out there anyway.

It's a great build with a real nostalgic feel. I hope to see more of the project as it progresses.
