Does anyone use original sets in their MOC's?
Does anyone use original sets in their MOC's?
This probably relates to the small sets and I realise the whole point of a MOC is to come up with something you've created but I was wondering if anyone includes original sets in their MOC's?

Does anyone? Yes. Lots of Cafe Corner standard buildings are used mint. Some people use stock sets from licenced themes. For castlers, I've definitely seen plenty of village MOCs made up 50% or more of Medieval Market village (often multiples of that set...)
Do I? No. No I do not.

Re: Does anyone use original sets in their MOC's?
This is fairly common in public displays where folks need a large number of structures to create a believable environment. Train and town layouts will often have CC buildings as well as a number of structures that were inspired by those sets. Castle layouts may have Dan Siskind's Blacksmith Shop or the MMV to create a village. Personally I try to avoid using sets in my own MOCs as they are not of my own design. I have no problem with having these sets incorporated into a large display, but I prefer not to use them when showing my own work as I wouldn't want even one viewer to incorrectly assume that these were my creations. Moreover, the design style of these sets may not match the aesthetic in which I build making them look a bit out of place with my work.

I do recall seeing one on this forum recently that had the juggling jester set incorporated into it.
I personally do not use stock sets. If anything, when I buy a set, it gets built once, stays assembled for a week or two (or until I need the parts!) and then gets disassembled and assimilated into my collection.

Agreed, repeat all the above for us. We buy stuff and it'll stay alive for a week or so. The one thing that seems to trickle into MOCs is beasts and carriages. Sets like smugglers hayride or small rafts can often be found in MOCs. Or beasts like the Crystal king. Sets like these are often altered just slightly and used to augment the MOC. I would definitely suggest altering the set to make it unique. Change the color scheme, or theme. Sets like Forestmen's river fortress done for wolfpack are still based from sets... but... still completly high level MOCs.AK_Brickster wrote:I do recall seeing one on this forum recently that had the juggling jester set incorporated into it.

Re: Does anyone use original sets in their MOC's?
My 2nd castle build ( I havent done that many yet lol) I basically took the kingdoms castle and supersized it. I am actually changing it even more to match the keep in the middle hopefully before brickcon.
Here is my original post and as you can see I kept most of the perimeter similar to the original set.

Re: Does anyone use original sets in their MOC's?
I usually build a set once (without using any provided stickers) for the challenge, then immediately disassemble it for parts. I may use pieces of an existing design in alternate colors, or I would use parts of a basic castle wall as a ruin, adding plant overgrowth. Very few of the large castle sets have any real semblance of an actual castle, IMO. MOCs I have seen here are far more realistic in design. Parts and time intensive maybe, but that is part of the fun of creating something unique.

Well I would, but none of my smaller sets really survive long enough.

I don't, like others have said my sets usually get parted out when I'm working on something that needs those parts. I might use some of the new prison carriages in mocs though.
p.s. I have not been making Castle MOCs very long so this may change a little.

Re: Does anyone use original sets in their MOC's?
I am working on a larger castle and a walled village and I was thinking about this approach for some aspects. I thought why reinvent the wheel. My village will be a hybrid European/Middle-eastern hodgepodge since I like the half-timbered houses but also wanted to set the scene during the crusader era in the crusader states. So, it will be the best (or worst) of both settings and we will see how it looks. But, back to the topic...I wanted to use the Fight for the Dagger #7571 POP tower and wall but expand on it some for the market/mosque area of the village. I also thought of using the blacksmith set #6918 and maybe the #7189 stable in the village as well. So, I bought #7571 and built it then tried to attach another wall section, connected via an archway, with a small mosque on the other side to mirror the POP set. Needless to say it did not look right. I think I will have to revisit this and modify the POP part to work with my building techniques. Maybe it is just me though. I guess it all depends on what you are going for and what you can live with. As for reinventing the wheel...well that is half the fun with legos.

My thoughts exactly. I'd venture to say that it's more like 95% the fun with Legosrapsmocs wrote: As for reinventing the wheel...well that is half the fun with legos.

I'm not sure if you're talking about mine but I did that here http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/272534AK_Brickster wrote:I do recall seeing one on this forum recently that had the juggling jester set incorporated into it.

And I use small stuff like this alot, as for big things.. Only the medeival market village maybe.. Because those are the bomb

Nope, that wasn't the one I was thinking of, but it's a great build! Thanks for sharing!Tastymuffins wrote:I'm not sure if you're talking about mine but I did that here http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/272534AK_Brickster wrote:I do recall seeing one on this forum recently that had the juggling jester set incorporated into it.

As for the presence of the juggler in some MOCs, it's pretty hard to fault it. It's a basic design, yet done very well. I would be hard-pressed to improve on it, myself.

I have on a couple occasions utilized the hinge ability on my copy of 375 to expand it and add a village in it.

I thought I would offer a shift in point of view. As someone who loves to brouse through the wonderful photos of what others have done, I love when I realize I have seen a small set in a larger MOC. What Tastymuffins did is pure fun in my opinion. The set is nto the focus but rather a "spice" that adds character to the great MOC. So I would say to a builder, if the set takes too much of center stage, don't do it. But if it adds to the overall picture in a non-intrusive way, enjoy the fun.
