Question on Recessed arches...

Post by ELMAS »

Hi All,

Working on a project and need to do the same type of recessed arch that Daniel did in this castle:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/8220893@N0 ... hotostream

In the left portion of the tower there is a very slight recess that does not look that was done with jumper plates.
I could use something like this. If Daniel or someone can share the joy I'd appreciate it. I will give full credit of course of the use.

Thanks!
Chris

While I don't know if this is the technique used on that castle, it looks like it's recessed the thickness of the outer 'skin' of the top arch, with probably the four-stud-wide version of this part shoved up in the gap. The rest of the wall may just be held back by friction.

Hope that makes any sense. I'm pretty bad at describing stuff like this.

I think I also saw one technique that uses a SNOTed tile pushed into the curve of the arch. I'm sure it's just a matter of moments before one of the experts around here can clarify how this is done for you :)

here's how I think it was done.
you start with this
Image
then do this
Image
then add the arch
Image
turn it around and......ta-da!

Thanks!! Makes sense. So I guess nothing but friction holds it together. I'll try to hold the bease somehow. Thanks alot!
Any other ideas still welcome :D

So here is how I did it. I only added a loose tile between the panel and the inside of the arch (in DK Tan in the pic) to prevent the whole wall from moving. It wont go anywhere:

Thanks all!

This is just what I needed for my current project. You and Daniel are officially on the list of people I'll thank when I finally finish and post it.

Now if I can only figure out how to put an 11.5 stud wide window in a 9 stud wide space, I'll be all set.

Very helpful thread :) Im trying to learn how to build recessed arches too..

What to do if we use arches that are 2 bricks tall? See the tall tower here (Same Castle) http://www.flickr.com/photos/8220893@N0 ... /lightbox/

This has me befuddled! Any help Castle Builders?

Many thanks!

You mean the 8-stud wide arch? There's a larger picture of it here.
I've been wondering about that one too. Maybe tiles?

Do you mean this arch? I think that one was made the same way as the other one.

Yup thats the one. Any arches that are 2 brick tall would probably have the same solution.

Actually the technique described above does not work for arches that are 2 bricks tall. Give it a try :)
