Penny Arcade and Minecraft Cuusoo

Post by Handar »

Penny Arcade has given us their take on the Minecraft Cuusoo project. Those of you familiar with the site know how to find the comic, others can do so by clicking here. As is often the case with Penny Arcade, profanity is used, so use your own judgement about opening the previous link.

I'm pretty sure it's the same response all the fans have had all along.

Minecraft is Lego as Lego is Minecraft. It's just essentially 2x2 blocks, we don't need a licence slapped on it and overpriced sets to appear. That it was ever suggested just seems silly.

I wholeheartedly agree. I think this whole idea is stupid. We builders work so hard to "de-blockify" our creations with offsets, SNOT, ect. Why would you want an expensive, licensed theme dedicated to building things with blocks, when that's what Lego is in the first place?
So dumb...

Having played around with Minecraft quite a bit, I will say there are many ways of 'deblockifying' your creations, or at least making them more asthetically pleasing. In fact, I consider that part of the challenge of the game, to make something that doesn't look possible at first, kind of how I go into some LEGO projects. Minecraft is not just 'about blocks'.

And all I really care about is if the set will have new pieces/molds/colors or anything else that can be used in a new way. If not, I'd probably not much care about it. But I wouldn't say it's necesarilly stupid. Might get Cuusoo more publicity and some more interesting sets made too.

Well, maybe "stupid" is a strong word, but it just seems like a redundant product. I'd rather see them devote their time and resources to something else is all. Like continuing Kingdoms with a BF line or something.

I suppose they could cancel CUUSOO, but LEGO is a big company. I wouldn't jump to the conclusion they canceled Kingdoms to make Minecraft sets (And it'll probably be just one set, going by how the system has worked already). I do wish Kingdoms kept going though. Or at least kept it around until the LOTR sets were revealed, so there wouldn't be a dry spot between castle-themed sets.

But I think CUUSOO should stick around. Sure, not everyone's going to like every set that comes out of it, but it's more likely to get something new and exciting eventually.

I don't mind Cuusoo. I think it's a neat site and a cool idea, but I think that the only reason minecraft got the votes it needed was because a bunch of minecraft fans found the link and spammed it up. I don't think that the general lego community is nearly as impressed with the idea as the vote tally may suggest.
But hey, everyone is entitled to their own opinion :)

I'm intrigued. I didn't vote, but I'm interested to see what this line looks like. I will say that there is definitely overlap between the Minecraft and LEGO communities. I haven't met a Minecraft player who didn't like LEGO.

Pshhh...I have.

Personally I find it to be pointless. As others have pointed out, we don't need to spend extra for normal bricks. Yeah yeah, there will be new molds and colors and all, but they won't make it worthwhile to me.

I'm a die hard LEGO fan at heart, as most of us are. I'm a pretty big fan of Minecraft, too. But LEGO always comes first. Keep that in mind for what I'll be saying next.

So I first heard about the idea when it really took off. I didn't like it, at all. I thought it was ridiculous, insane, and bringing the wrong kind of people into the LEGO community. But as time went on, I warmed up to the idea. Who knows? Maybe we'll get some neat pickaxes/swords if they are minifigure scaled. Or maybe we'll get a whole new type of minifigure? A Steve (player entity in Minecraft for those unaware) minifigure? Who knows?

Bottom line is: Don't knock is just because it's Minecraft. While there are some CUUSOO ideas I'd rather see implemented (LEGO Legend of Zelda, anyone?), I'm sure the results will be very interesting.
