Lands of Classic Castle map draft voting

Post by wobnam »

Remember that you are voting for a map draft - consider only the main layout of the land and placement of the factions, not smaller details and graphic quality. Please also consider all factions, not just the one(s) you would like to belong to ;)

Voting will end in 48 hours.

Factions

Some faction details that might be good to keep in mind while evaluating entries:

BLUE
- Terrain: Mountainous/harsh/sub-arctic.
- Building style/materials: Small fortifications, stone.
- Natural resources: Stone, metal, fish.
- Economy: Mining, fishing.
- Army: Light infantry.
- Navy: Small vessels.

GREEN
- Terrain: Forest/foothills.
- Building style/materials: Medium sized castles, wood and stone.
- Natural resources: Wood, wildlife.
- Economy: Hunting.
- Army: Archers, light cavalry.
- Navy: Large ships.

RED
- Terrain: Grasslands/desert.
- Building style/materials: Large castles, sandstone.
- Natural resources: Fertile land (some areas).
- Economy: Livestock, horses, agriculture.
- Army: Heavy cavalry.
- Navy: Medium sized ships.

OUTLAWS / "GOLD"
- Terrain: The Outlaws can be found all over the world, but their main areas are a magic Isle and a swampy canyon.
- Building style/materials: Crude, varied.
- Natural resources: Varied.
- Economy: Theft, magic.
- Army: Footsoldiers, magic.
- Navy: Varied.

There were some great entries but in the end I voted for shmails. I liked the shape of the map, the faction placement, the unclaimed island to the East and the general terrain placement.

Good luck to all!

I voted for Wobnam's map. I liked the general layout, including the numerous minor islands.

I voted for Shmails' map, but only because he has my fair maiden locked away in his tower! :D Good luck to all the entries!

A hard choice to make, I'm impressed by the amount of time and work people put in it,

I voted for smails design, I think it is the best option for LCC. If the voting would have been about good looks, I would have voted for Legokilt. Pen and paper beats photoshop anytime :D

I voted on shmails draft because i felt it was closest to what we are looking for. And didn`t vote on my on draft because it feels a bit lame to vote on yourself :D

Mmmh, it's a difficult choice. I had to rule them out, one by one, to get to the winner.

Sir Zeppelin's map is missing some things, as main rivers and terrain type apart from mountains. The terrain of the blue faction is split up over the main continent and a big island. I wonder if blue would be happy about it. It permits accessing new area over land (in the east mainly) if necessary. That's a plus, but it's not my winner.

Albatross_Viking spent a lot of thoughts on terrain types and climate, considering north and south. But I feel the lands are too far from each other for interaction. It almost looks like a commonwealth of islands. A pity of the beautiful geographical map, but it's less suited for this game I think.

Wobnam's map is in some ways quite similar to shmails' one. But I miss some big rivers and a swampy area. All contact and clashes will happen in the centre, to which the gold faction has no clear access. Despite that the borders are not fixed, but a centre of power for the factions is being given, it doesn't win from shmails' map and can't be my nr. 1.

Legokilt's map really struck me as a hand-drawn map from early years. The red faction seems to have a lot more mountains than the blues do, the gold faction has a very large area on the continent as they've got a mystic isle as well. And I do miss islands. Alas.

My own map has a few plusses. Variation in coastline, climate ranges from north to south, and a huge isle in a even bigger lake in the middle of the map. The map can be extended over land as well as over sea when necessary. The minor points: green has acces only to a tropical sea. It should have been swapped with the red grounds. It's unclaer how big this mystic isle is (it might be a continent) and wether one can sail from the blue area to the red and green lands. That's to undefined to base the rules of the game upon. Having the north on the left and the east on top is a nice gimmick, but makes it harder to communicate about it, as mistakes are likely to happen.

Remainders are shmails' map en mencot's one. The latter shows more shared border, which means more places to interact with another faction. The map can be extended over land as well as over water. Each faction has got a large island, not only gold. I like the idea of the dark lands and the dark forest being uninhabited at the start of it all. Shmails' map is more beautifully drawn (but that's not a criterium right now), has the blue faction with all their ice and snow where you'd expect them: north, and has indicated where the factions go without giving a 'political border'. The golden swamp is a bit overlarge I guess.

It was tough, but I think mencot's one wins on playability. So here's my vote, sir.

Once the Lore contest is over, we'll make some adjustments to whatever map draft is chosen to fit with the story, and fill in all the details like small rivers, lakes, islands etc.

It would be very useful if people posted likes and dislikes in this thread, both about the map they voted for and others. It doesn't have to be as extensive as koffiemoc's post, the important thing is to let us know what you'd like to see in the final map. For example, "I like map A but I'd like to see islands like in map B".

I can't say I agree to all of the either. But some can be changed.

I think it's a bit unlikely that all the nations would share borders. The way Shmails has his map set up is perfect as far as political divisions go, at least in my opinion. A question that hasn't been raised is, How big is this landmass? That would determine several things, such as climate variation and how big and powerful these factions really are. This, I think, is a very important question.
