AOE II - AGE OF CONQUERORS!

Post by AK_Brickster »

Do you like the RTS game "Age of Empires II - Age of Kings" (and it's expansion, "Age of Conquerors")?

Want to show off your mad skillz? :tasty:

I propose that we get some CC members together for a AOE showdown!

Reply to this thread if you're interested, and what day/time would work best for you (keep your timezone in mind). Also, post your favorite civilization and what you'd consider your skill level to be ("I can beat 1v1 on easy", or "1v2 on hard", etc.)

If we get enough people interested, it might even be fun to divide people up into their respective LCC factions and make it into a global challenge!

I'll start things off:

Time: A Saturday or Sunday afternoon/evening, but not the 1st Saturday of the month (LUG meetings) (PST)
Favorite Civ: I usually played as the Teutons or Spanish, depending on the map type (Land vs Water)
Skill: When I actually played on a regular basis, I could beat hard 1 v 1 no problem. Now would probably be hard-pressed to beat 1 v 1 on medium, haha.
Color: Blue! (On, Garheim!)

Thanks for taking me up on my offer, AK (If you would also leave some input in My topic as well I'd appreciate it)!

Anyway, this all sounds good, however I wouldn't be able to do it on Saturday, as I observe the Sabbath (I assume that you know what that is).

Time: Sunday Afternoon
Favorite Civ: Tuetons or Byzantines
Skill Level: Don't even know. Probably 1v1 Medium.
Color: Green
Time Zone: EDT

Good to see this taking off!
Just a note here, I propose we play the expansion unless everybody don't have it.
Also, we need to find out where we're going to play it? I've never played online, but heard some good stuff about the client Voobly...

Time and Zone: pretty much any afternoon at the moment, GMT+1 (believe it's +2 in the summer, actually).
Favorite Civs: Spanish or Chinese, depends on the settings.
Skill Level: last I checked I could beat 1v1 hard.

EDIT: also, take a look at this website: http://aok.heavengames.com/
There's downloadable maps, modpacks, a forum, a guide to playing online (http://aok.heavengames.com/faqs/playing-online) e.t.c. In general, a lot of AoK ressources.

Wow!! This looks very promising! :D

I say we try " Direct IP "

You simply type it in and it takes you right to the hosted game. That how me and my brother play online. :)

Yes Conquerors Expansion is the way to go.

Time: Sunday afternoon/evening, I could possibly do a Saturday afternoon but I'm often playing Frisbee then. So, Sunday afternoon is best for me.
Favorite Civ: Byzantines. And I'm always RED :D
Skill:I could safely say 1v1 medium.

If IP works, that method's great. The thing is, I tried it once and it didn't quite work out. But if it works for you and Steven (where's he in all this, by the way? Sign up!), I vote for it as well.
If we're making calls on colours now:
Purple iz meine!
BTW: Mark, one of my friends almost always play Byzantines as well, and with red colour. Also, your names are very similar. Funny coincidence, you shouldn't happen to be danish?

Haven't played in forever and was doing terrible at first, but I beat it on 1v1 Hardest the other day. Favoring the Britons so far (on land maps), but haven't experimented with seafaring factions yet (keep playing random maps).

My connection has been pretty junky lately, so not sure when I'll be able to play. Otherwise it'd be any evening or weekend afternoon (US-Central).

Sadly, I'm not Danish. Just a plain old American. ;)
But since we're such good friends in LCC, we should be allies in AOE, yes? :D

To explain a bit more about Direct IP
One of us ( it doesn't really matter, preferably someone with a strong internet connection) "creates" a game in AOE and He gets an IP. Often something like 192.168.1.135 And then on the agreed day, he can PM his game's IP to the other CC members. And the rest get on AOE, then click multi-player and then double click "Internet TCP/IP Connection for direct play" Then type in the IP and it will connect you to the multiplayer game screen.

Once connected to the game, participants can use the chat box at the bottom of the screen to communicate about which map we'll play on, and what settings we want.. etc.etc...

It usually works flawlessly. :)

I told him about it.. But I don't know if he's playing or not.

We should try to do a test-run for everyone beforehand to make sure they can connect that way. Wouldn't be fun if it was game day and it wasn't working for someone and they didn't have a chance to figure out what was wrong because everyone else is ready to go.

Maybe you can test on your own if you have 2 computers running the game, or PM someone on this list to set up 15 mins some evening to test it out between the two of you. (maybe you could even do a quick skirmish to hone your skills at the same time ;) )

I've had four computers connected and playing before, and the AOE limit is 8. :)

{EDIT}
But it's a good idea.
I'm free tomorrow afternoon, If anyone else's schedule is open I'd be happy to test it out with someone. :)

Can do! Not exactly sure how it works though. Wouldn't you have to tell me your server name (or vice versa if I host the test)?

If for nothing else, then at least for the testing purposes, I think we should add a list of peoples' time zones to the MP.
Mine is currently, due to summer time GMT/UTC +2 (CEST)
My summer vacation just started, so I'm ready pretty much any time at the moment.

Ok I'm (UTC-05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada)

@Friskywiskers, You are located in NY state right? We're in the same time zone, Correct?

@Albatross_Viking, Your time zone is ahead of ours by 6 hours.

{EDIT} Ok, I can host if that works for you guys. :) @Friskywiskers, I'm not sure. All I know is that you can use the IP number to connect the different computers.

I'm going to be at church till about 12:00, But we'll want to host the game early enough for AV over in Denmark.

Would 1:00(eastern time{my time[7:00 for AV]}) Be a good time for everybody?

7:00 PM, I take it... could we push it another hour, up to 8:00?
If, of course, the moment fits everybody else.
Regarding the time, do you Americans put the clock an hour forwards in summer (the term that turns CET into CEST) and back in winter, since, if you don't, I believe I'm 7 hours ahead of you instead of 6.

Sure! I can move it to 8:00 (your time)

Does that work for you friskywiskers?

it's now 1:00 PM here

We Americans do move our clocks forward in the spring and back again in the fall, so it should be fine. (6 hours) :)

You are referring to the test, right? 2:00 Eastern Daylight Time will be fine for me, then.

@Mark of Falworth, Yes we are in the same time zone. Can you PM everyone your IP address?

EDIT: We should post our Age of Empire Usernames so we know who is who during the game. Mine is Sir Theodon
