No sticking Decals

Postby Hayden. » Mon Jul 23, 2012 4:17 pm

I'm not sure about the nest of you guys, But I don't want to stick things onto my figures, and possibly ruin their design, so I've come up with a design that allows customisation with out stickers, This is one I've made for a game like LCC, called Legends of Brickdom over on flickr;
http://www.flickr.com/groups/legends_of_brickdom/

Here's my design, so please tell me about how the design is, an adaption of a lego one, and how the non-stick techniqwue is like.

Cheers

P.S Make sure to read the notes on flickr, they explain a lot!

It is a good idea, but I would suggest not sticking through the hole with a pencil, but instead carefully cutting the hole out. Just so you have a nice edge, you know? I would like to see this on a minifig!
You would rather be building right now.

Yeah ,I've made some, once I'e taken pictures I'll post them ;)
It would be nice to cut it out, but its really fiddly , so I just put it over a bit of blue tack, then stick the pencil though there, then the hole comes out neat.

That seems to look and work really good :tasty: And that it gets a bit higher on the shoulders around the neck makes it look really good, like heavier armor. Nice

Yep, these do look very nice! I see that the punch out isn't really a problem now, because the head covers that up.

Indeed, however you need to be carefully, other wise the hole can tear the hole neck and ruin the decal.

That's not bad. You should consider using packaging tape on the decal. Then when you cut it out, there will be no sticky substance touching the actual piece (as desired), but you'll also have a protective covering on the design and a bit of shininess to it. I'd maybe keep the tape off of the part to fold under because it would probably make it too tight. Just a thought. It's worth giving a try.

I like this design a great deal. As others have mentioned, it lies a bit higher than the minifigures' shoulders. This gives it a good three dimensional "armor" effect that enhances the look overall. Mind if I use your idea for a few of my soliders?

I'm sure that "hunching" effect at the shoulders could be avoided by just changing where you fold the template a tiny bit, if you wanted to avoid it, that is. And I was thinking of covering them with scotch tape to get a more matted look, as regular printing isn't truly "glossy" like packing tape would make it.

Tycho Mckorly, Thanks you and feel free to use the idea, just give credit where credit is due! :)

AK and Quickblade Tape is a good idea, and It might make it look shiny, I might give it a go with cellotape as its slightly thinner so not making the armour any more bulky, I'll post the results here.
However AK I quite like teh Hunching effect, Feel free to change it if you wish, but Ad others have mentioned it makes it look more 3-D.

I like it! very clever idea. If I were to do this, I would leave the 'hunching', because, as previously mentioned, it gives it a depth, and the general effect of a mail shirt. :D
