It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining and a lot of snow melted. Olaf and 3 of his comrades in arms crossed a small pass. Suddenly, the sun cowered behind dark clouds. It began to snow...
They went in a small cave, where it was dry and warm. They went deeper and deeper in there. Olaf had a bad feeling about this, but as soon as they found a skeleton, he tried to convince the other soldiers. He didn't succeed.
So he went back and waited at the opening of the cave.
10 Minutes later, he heard a cry, but it didn't seem scary, it more sounded like a crow. His friends came back...
... with a lot of GOLD. They found the forgotten treasure of the famous king Harald. Olafs comrades in arms didn't wanted to share the treasure with him. So there was only one way...
Kill them!
Olaf was the strongest of them and he killed all 3 fellows. Of course he had no pity with them, cause gold is even more important than friends for a viking.
But now he had a problem: He wanted to get home to his wife and his 9 children, but how should he explain that his comrades in arms are dead? He began to deliberate a story. A wild animal killed them, maybe a wolf, or rather a bear...
No, that wouldn't work. They were too strong. It had to be something larger, something more dangerous, something more destructive! But he didn't know any kind of animal who could be like that, so he had to figure out a fabulous one...
When he got home, he told to the people in his village:
"...and then it came. It was a huge beast, double the high of my house. It had a hard scale armor and with our swords, we couldn't wound it. It attacked us with his giant claws. We didn't know what to do, so we split up and run each in another direction. Buttttt... this beast also had wings, like a bird. And it could breath fire :O. It followed another one, so I could escape and hide away. I'm the only surviving one. (minute's silence) All others are dead! They are DEAD!"
And so it came, that everyone talked about this beast. Some years later they named it "Dragon" and used images of it to scare the enemy in the war...
