Over Christmas I have been continue to develop my Castle complec 'Elysium'! Although it's not complete I would value any suggestions or advice. I have been busy working on the Great Hall and market square. Please have a look at the images and my flicker account. Happy building and a Happy New Year :)

Ah,I see! :) One more question, how many baseplates does it sit on? It looks to be pretty big.

From the big pic, I was going to comment that the building on the far right looked rather blah when compared to the other buildings. But then I noticed from the other pics that it was just the end of the Great Hall, which looks much more interesting from the side. That's quite a lot of detail and work on the inside too, though it looks like some of the diners would be miffed and having their table move away from them each time the building is opened. ;)

One thing detracts from the whole thing for me. The roofs are all red. I think it would hold more interest with more variation in colour. The roof lines are nice, so I'm not suggesting redesigning them. Just colour.

Let me preface this post by saying that I do not consider myself a master builder by any stretch, but I can offer some suggestions.
First off, I think your interior is where this moc really shines. You have some fantastic features and the play value looks phenomenal. This reminds me of my first real castle build I did a couple of years back somewhat http://www.flickr.com/photos/fraslund/5 ... hotostream (although there is much more to this one)

The one area I would critique would be the exterior walls. I personally love using panels as they offer a quick way to fill up space, but they are easy to overuse and can get repetitive. One way I have gotten around that is to recess them back a brick by surrounding them with support columns or in your case, you could extend your overhang all along the top two brick lengths at the top of your wall. This would create a depth that would combat that flat look. I don’t know if it’s the best example, but I used a good deal of panels in this tower. http://www.flickr.com/photos/fraslund/6 ... otostream/

My style has changed since then, but I think it worked for the build at the time.

The other thing that stands out to me is the dark gray accents. I like using dark grey as an accent color to force shadows or create an architectural break, but they can also be distracting as well. If you had the bottom layer of your wall all dark grey or just the inverted slopes along your parapets, I think that would look great.

If you look at these pics you can see that I used dark gray inverted slopes to create that shadow effect and even lined the bottom breaks of my central gatehouse breaks with dark grey plates. http://www.flickr.com/photos/fraslund/8 ... otostream/

Hope that helps,

David

Hi Footsteps,

Thank you for the comments. I know what you mean about the dinners not being to happy, lol. I like your idea about changing the colour of some of the roof sections. I shall have ago at changing them and see how it looks.
Cheers

Hi David,

thank you for your comments, much appreciated. I had a good look at those suggestions you posted and I think they are fantastic. Some really great detail. What I have built is very similar to one of your first builds. I love your middle section, makes the whole build really realistic. I agree with you about the exterior wall panels, definatly can become a little repetative. I really like the column idea and the overhang and i will definatly give that a go. I will give the dark grey bricks along as the bottom layer of my wall a try to. I wasnt happy with how I intergrated them, but I wanted to give some kind of texture instead of a plain stone grey wall.

I love the last link, that build is just awesome. I have been thinking about adding curved section or a curved tower with a spiral staircase.
Thanks for your advice, really appreciate it,
Kevin
