The Road goes ever on and on

Post by Bruce N H »

Hey all,

Bruce builds! Okay, now that you're done fainting, this is my entry for round 1 of the Middle Earth LEGO Olympics.

Image

The Road goes ever on and on
Out from the door where it began,
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
Let others follow it who can!
Let them a journey new begin,
But I at last with weary feet
Will turn towards the lighted inn,
My evening-rest and sleep to meet.

Some fourth wall commentary: In the discussion for the MELO rules it was stated that round 1 should be anything from the Hobbit or the Lord of the Rings, but no First Age stuff. Mainly just being a pedantic geek, I pointed out that the First Age is referenced all throughout LotR, and I was going to do a vig based on Bilbo's 'Earendil was a Mariner' to make my point. That got me thinking of illustrating poems, though, and this seemed like a better idea. You could think of this as the Green Dragon, if you want, though the dragon on the flag isn't green. Okay, just some random inn - must be in Bree, though, since there is a second story. Anyway, this was originally going to be more ambitious and include some more buildings, but due to time those got cut out. My main focus was always going to be on the lone hobbit approaching the inn with the open door with light spilling out, so I was happy with this. Sorry about the photography. Due to taking pics at the last minute (the deadline is tonight), I was pretty sloppy with the backdrop. I think the lighting works best in pic 2, but the fig is placed a little better in pic 1. I'll go back and re-photograph later, but that won't be for the MELO.

This pic has a great feel to it! The lighting works so well. I love the warm gold coming from the lattice windows up top, it looks warm and inviting. Awesome!

Nice! I like the rough wall on the side. What did you use to light the building?

I happened to see this on MOCpages earlier today and after looking at it here I'm still amazed how wonderful of a build this is. Well done Bruce and good luck! :D

The building is open on the back side. There's a desk lamp lying behind, and I threw a yellow pillow case over it to give the warmer glow (without it you just got this glaring light coming through).

The mottled lighting in the upper story is terrific. Great to see you building, Bruce! Next you should come over to the LCC! ;)

Wait, what?? Where are my smelling salts?

Anyway, this is really nice. The lighting really makes it look great. The backdrop is very reminiscent of looming mountains, and I find the openness of the path with the single figure on it quite appealing. Good luck in the MEL Olympics. ;-)

Really great creation. My favorite part would have to be the texture in the walls. It just adds to the character of the build nicely.

EDIT: Also, glad you made it to round 2! It will be cool to see what you come up with for 'The Mirror a Galadriel'.
