Building Music

Post by OverLoad »

Hello fellow CCers,

I remember discussion years back on what music people build to, although I cannot recall where it was. So I propose a thread regarding the music that you guys listen to, if any, while building. Previously, I would have the TV on just as some background noise when I was building, but I am currently creating a playlist of dark ambient/dungeon synth tracks to listen to. I might throw in a few Minecraft songs as well, those tend to be very inspirational.

For general discussion, what kind of music do you guys listen to while building? Is it whatever's on the radio? Medieval themed music? Classical? Or do you not listen to music at all while building? Feel free to share! :)

To end this discussion, I'll leave some music for those interested. C418-Sweden

YES! Sweden is my favorite song from C418. (If you like Sweden, check out the Remix by Caution and Crisis)

Recently, I've been listening to a band called Two Door Cinema Club which is a British band that has a lot of great and interesting melodies. Most of the time I will listen to a podcast though (usually lego or minecraft related) when I'm working on something complicated. I do have a Lego playlist on my iPod that has a collection of Lego songs that I've collected over the years (Such as... Lego- by Ian Gomn, Girls Don't play Lego - by the Daisy Riots, Zack the Lego Maniac Song by ???, etc.) but since it's limited, it gets a little old after a while.

Interesting topic... I choose the music depending on the theme I'm building. When I'm building some general landscape/building stuff I mostly just play through my iTunes Library on random (songs I haven't heard recently, to get a little inspiration).

The Minecraft soundtrack is awesome, but too much associated with Minecraf - I want to play MC when I hear it *g*

When building fight/battle scenes I have my go-to bands and compilations: for epic epicness I prefer This was a rather long list, I know, but it gives hours and hours of mood music for the right occasion

I leave you with two/three explicit song suggestions :

Oh now we hit it off people! These kind of topics are the ones I love....
Mitah, your choices are great overall, but Apocalyptica is the one name on there that got me in to them again, thanks for that! (although I might add that Toreador and Toreador II are my favorites  )
My building music is different most of the times, depends on my mood really. Movie music tends to help a lot of the times, my current movie music consists the following soundtracks:
Ironclad soundtrack by Lorne Balfe (sample here)
King Arthur soundtrack by Hans Zimmer (of course) (sample here)
Robin Hood soundtrack by Marc Streitenfeld (sample here)
Show White and the Huntsman, well only one song in particular actually, Warriors on the Beach
The Dark Knight rises (again) Hans Zimmer (sample here)
The Last Samurai (and again) Hans Zimmer (sample here)

When I'm in a different mood however I like to crank it up to eleven as Nigel Tuffnel put it so wisely
Some bands in the line-up:
Unearth
The Abscence
Lamb of God
Trivium
Eluveitie
Mastodon
Machine Head
As I Lay Dying
Queens of the Stone Age
Foo Fighters

I could go on for a while, but I think this'll do :D . Oh warning, if you do not like metal that much and you have your volume on pretty high, I suggest you turn it down a couple of notches... 8)

I referenced Hope Vol. 2 because I have a special connection with this song - When I first saw Vidocq the scene with the death by lightning strike in the field (at 0:50 in the music video) was so awesome I stuck with me - and when I saw the music video and that scene again in thought I must recreate this with LEGO... and I still have plans for that scene and I hope I'll have time to build it soon. My overall Apocalyptica favourite song mus be Path - the video is awesome, and even path vol 2 is great (although I'm biased because I'm a Guano Apes fan)

Back on topic - I'm personally having a hard time building to classical metal (except QOTSA and FF, they always work for me ;-)), I find it hard to concentrate... Lamb of God is a no-go while doing anything - they somehow awake rage in me and I can't quite control it (it's good though in the car when you have to get somewhere quickly)...

I'd be really interested to hear what other people listen to while building.

What an interesting question! I've never really established "building music"...which is odd, because I normally have music to fit every occasion. The soundtrack to the Wii game Boom Blox, as well as the game itself, has always reminded me of LEGO, though. And I've managed to get ahold of some actual music from LEGOLand parks, though the quality isn't great.

Okay let's start this off...

I find that listening to music while building can be quite inspirational and just plain soothing to the mind. I've always been able to do things better while listening to music or someone talking, so I definitely prefer to be listening to something while doing any sort of project. Though I've never listened to Medieval themed music while building, I think I may have to try it out.

The majority of the time I do listen to music while building, but not always. I have one playlist with about 300 songs of mixed genres and styles of music, which is what I most often listen to while doing anything LEGO related. I prefer Christian music and some Contemporary but I usually like to keep the music I listen to clean.
I listen to anything from Heavymetal to a little bit of Gospel, it's always good to spice things up.

I usually listen to metal.

Manowar
Metallica
Opeth
Death
Therion
Iron Maiden

I once read (and firmly believe) that recognizing the mathematical patterns in music is good for your brain and I've found it beneficial for work and play.

... and sometimes you can learn a little bit about classic literature:

Agreed. It'll be fun to see everyone's taste and opinions. The type of music a person enjoys and listens too can tell you a lot about their personality.

Death
Death is a fantastic band, although not something I'd listen to while MOCing. Perhaps some tracks off The Sound Of Perseverance, but nothing beyond that.

Speaking of metal, I've added some black metal into the mix, including Bathory's masterpiece Blood Fire Death. Since I'm posting in my own topic, I'll leave a song some of you might enjoy: Depressive Silence - Darkned Empires (Full Album)

I don't usually listen to music, since my building space is part of the main living area in my apartment, and my wife normally has the TV on. Once I get a dedicated Lego room, I probably will put a small TV in there that I can put a basketball game on or something, but if listening to music, I like slower instrumental stuff. Metal is great for certain occasions, but when really concentrating, I think it would just make my head hurt.

I like listening to music for just about anything since it seems to help me concentrate better then without music, and Iv'e found that most of my MOCs that aren't being built for a contest or something, they will usually have elements of what I'm listening to mixed in.
I will generally listen to
Abney Park (I like them mostly because they have very steampunk inspired music :D )
Apocalyptica
Metallica
some Irish death songs
and some dubstep
For the glory of Garhim!!!

I don't listen to music while building. I used to watch dvds but I try and avoid that now too if I can. I leave my phone in another room too. No distractions basically.
