Northern Horde - baby Moc

Post by Thor »

Before anyone starts a rant, I want to point out that I'm in the middle of my 2nd Dark Age. It is GOOD that I even was able to find time to put together this. I am not a builder but tried to build a bit too show off my Northern Army.

So please if you are looking for latest fad of SNOT or building techniques you probably want to hit the back button now. If you are a fan of minifigs in a basic Moc setting and interested in seeing my Northern Horde on the warpath then by all means keep reading.

This is by far my favorite faction and our very own Bronx sent Ravens to me and asked me to join his Dragon Faction.... Although my Horde does not have the numbers as other armies here on CC, they are all mounted on horseback. They can out run Knights and heavy Cavalry and run down infantry and Archers. They strike cities and villages fast, pillage and raid, and then vanish into the fog before the nobles can rally their troops to counter.

The numbers: 155 Light Calvary- Shields, Long and short swords, spears and battle axes, minimal Armor, 20 mounted Archers

The Horde has probably peaked.... kind of would like to get the archers up to 50 and then have 200 max soldiers. A few more raids and there should be no one riding bareback or shieldless. Will likely change out some items as I like to have a mix match look..Hobbit beards on their way. Comments are appreciated and I can answer any questions. Again, I'm not a builder, but spent 3 hours trying to create an environment....this summer when the Legos come out again I'll try to do a Building Moc and then show only a portion as it's hard to try to display all of the Bad *** dudes.

Enjoy.

Hay man, that's fine! We all experience dim ages in our Lego "careers". I am extremely impressed with the size of this horde, and I quite like the design as well. You should never be afraid that people won't like your MOCs because "it doesn't habe the latest SNOT rocks. In fact, we recently had a whole discussion over the notion that many people simply "dump" trendy techniques onto a build and call it "good". You should check it out here is a link.

Whoa, sweet big flipping army you got there! When I had my procrastinating age I was focusing more on minifigs and just messing around with combos and stuff. I don't build the best myself, so a lot of times I'll base it around my minifigs. I'm into dark/forestmen and Elves myself, but I really like what you've go going here. :D

That last photo is absolutely ridiculous . . . and, I seriously mean that in the coolest way possible. I love it!

The ragtag look is great, too, with the various Viking torsos, Dark Forestmen and bare chest torsos, all with varying weapons and shields. You definitely nailed the mix-and-match appearance for sure.

Some questions/comments:
  • - How many saddles did you wind up being short on?
    - From your original horde (the 2010 photos), you seemed to really favor a specific head for your leader. Is it still your favorite?
    - Is the Gloin beard going to be for Bran?
    - I think the Eomer helm seems a little too ornate for these guys. Maybe try the regular Rohan soldier one?
    - Who are their main enemies? Kingdoms Lion Knights? Kingdoms Dragon Knights?
Oh, and you are a builder . . . an army builder. And, I'm right there with ya. :D

What more can I say than WOW! The lighting, the camera work and the army are all fantastic. At points it looks like a Celtic Horde about to descend on Rome

Thanks to everyone for the kind comments. Hope to inspire some of you to go and dust off those old Lego VIking torsos, the torsos and heads are my favorite of all time. The Spartan head comes in second as my fav head so you'll see plenty of those throughout the horde.

Good questions Bronx. I was going for nordic/geranic/celtic cross when I first started these back in 2010....but they kind of look a mix of different northern tribes, ie. Surfer torso barbarians riding bareback and armor clad norse...

The Odin looking guy with white hair and beard is Bran.....the leader but now that i've gon from 50 to 175 I think Bran would be a elder chieftan of a tribe and then have different tribes in the horde ie Red headed men from the North East (gloin beards) Black haird less facial hair figs from the coast..and they will have their own leader.

Your right the Eomer helm is too ornate..which is why the 6 I just got last week did not make it into the moc....only used that one on one of the chieftan leaders as maybe it was a gift or stolen from a battle, passed down by generations..... I do really like Eomer's Helmet, it's my favorite of all time ( do not have theodens yet, so perhaps that will be better) so maybe I start a faction using that helmet that is sperate from the horde.

Saddles, Probably around 50 riding bareback....which actually looks really good for the surfer torso bararians...but bad with northern regualr with light armor and helm. Did not get a certain count but I probably do have 70-90 brown/blay saddles but as you can see about 30 blue and yellow and white, one red (the one with the broken clip) I just hate buying saddles cause they are expensive and I feel like I'd rather have a shield or weapon.....Need more greatswords

Enemies.... Richard is right, historically they look like celctic/germanic tribes decending on rome....Rome never did conquer the geranic tribes.

My next biggest faction is the dragon knights (about 70) but I think the crownies are more likely to be encroaching on their hunting lands and grazing pastures.

I think the thing I'm most impressed by is that the entire army is mounted! Sweeeeeeeeeeet.
