**Post your favorite MOC and review the one above you!**

Post by AK_Brickster »

Hey guys, I thought this might be fun.

Here's the idea:

Post a picture - or pictures with link to additional photos, if desired - of one of your favorite MOCs you've ever made.
(Be sure to follow forum image guidelines)

Next, take a look at the MOC that is in the post directly before yours, and give it a review! You can point out what you like/don't like, what parts of it might have inspired you, what parts could benefit from a different technique, etc. Be sure to keep it friendly and constructive.

Don't have a back and forth discussion with anyone else in this thread. Just post your fav. MOC of your own and comment on the one above you. After enough people have gone, if it starts to slow down, I imagine it would be fine to submit another one of your top creations later on so that we can keep the thread going.

(This may have been done before, but in the 2 1/2 years I've been on this forum, I don't recall seeing anything like it.)

I'll let someone else go first.... There's nobody to review yet, so all you have to do is post pics of your best MOC.

Awesome idea for a topic Jordon! This should be fun. :D

Soccerkid, I must say I'm most impressed by your build. The overall design of the castle is sleek, mighty and very architecturally accurate. There's many, many awesome details I could point out but I'll just name a few. I quite like the river/waterfall, the oncoming attack of men (the 'figs are posed expertly), the textures on the wall, the stainglass windows and the different levels through-out the castle. This really is a superb build. My only nitpick would have to be the base around the build. Making it rise and then lower seems to make it a bit cluttered. Other then that tiny thing the build is flawless in my opinion. Great job buddy! :)

Here's my favorite build:

Hey that is a cool idea!

JustinM:

Certainly impressive, I like the castle in the background and the waterfall area. The other buildings are very nice as well. The only thing is the lighting is a bit tacky. This is a huge build and I assume you simply struggled getting it evenly lit. The landscape is good, but I think you would have been better off going a tad smaller so you could liven up the blank grassy areas. A 7/10!

Hey,

Nice thread idea! Frisky, I really like this castle. The color blocking is very nice, with areas of largely solid colors broken up by nice contrasting details in other colors. The mottling and texture on the castle itself is very nice and subtle - a brick brick here, a grill brick there, a few plates in offsetting colors there, plus the mixing in of gray/bley works well in the light shades. Some great natural landscaping - I like how the path doesn't sit on top of the ground, but is rather even with the green plates on either side. Arrow slits and wooden portions are nicely incorporated and don't feel like they were just added in to utilize some technique. Perhaps my favorite detail is the wooden door you built on the far side of the little bridge. That brings me to one of my two critiques - the tower sitting out on the rock seems odd. Your castle is similar in construction to Soccerkid6's a few posts earlier in the thread - a small castle with an offset tower on the other side of some water connected by a bridge. But in his case the tower made sense - if you were coming to the castle from the far side of the river, you had to enter through the guarded tower, and then cross a narrow bridge where you'd be vulnerable to bowmen in the castle, so this made sense as a defensive measure. In your case, from the figs' perspective I'm not sure what that tower accomplishes by being out on that little rock (aside from looking cool, granted) that wouldn't be much more easily accomplished by building another tower on the main land directly attached to the main castle. My other critique is that the water portion seems a little dull. Perhaps add some waves, or maybe a boat tied up to a small dock with a path leading down to that little beach.

Hmm, not sure if I can pick a favorite. Here's an old one that I thought turned out quite nicely - Gandalf and Pippin approach Minas Tirith

OK, I guess I'll jump in now. I'm glad that you guys liked the idea for this thread! :D

Bruce -

I like your building style, and this MOC is consistent with the look of some of your other projects. It feels very "classic" to me, which I like, being a child of the 80's & 90's.

For this MOC in particular, I really like the sense of scale that you get from the FP. A lot of microscale builders use 1x1 technic bricks with holes or headlight bricks to make 'windows', but I think the lack of them serves you well here because the city is so far away that you shouldn't be able to see those kind of details anyway. That said, the two windows in the gatehouse towers work perfectly because they draw the eye to the gate and really help it 'pop' from the rest of the wall. You also did a nice job with the mountain. I like how there are lots of trees near the base and then they thin out and eventually give way to snow, which is accurate. The texture is also good and makes the mountain look very rugged and craggy, although I don't know if the overhanging bits might make for a little too much texture, particularly as you near the top.
My critique would be mainly on the landscape between the rider and the city. It would have been nice to put a tree or some vegetation at different depth planes in the scene. maybe a tree on the far right or left edge of the foreground (so as not to obstruct the view of the city) and then some sort of micro-scale tree(s) about halfway out to further add to the depth. Even a plate or two to represent a bit of rolling terrain would have helped to break it up a bit. Personally, I prefer saddles with horses, but I'm guessing you went bareback to stay true to the scene in the movie.

Here is one of my favorite MOCs of mine, and the only one that I've had featured on TBB (maybe not the best way to judge a MOC's excellence, but I think it means a little, at least). This was built for the LUG showcase display at the Lego store in Bellevue, WA last year.

First off....

AK_Brickster:

This has always been one of my favorite MOCs of yours. All the detail you put into the interior is awesome. Great job on the snowscaping as well. This is one great MOC that'll always be at the top of my list. This is also one of my favorite LCC (Garhiem) MOCs! :) Two of my favorite parts of this MOC are the blue and white stained glass windows, and the chandelier! :)

Again, great job buddy! :)

And now here's mine:

Okay let see. I like your moc you have there for the following resons. One the wall is pretty well done. Also the part above the gate is a nice touch. The ground for the moc is not bad either theres a nice amount of plant life there, and finally the windows were well done.

So heres my moc that is my favorite, nothing spectacular but I like it.

Purple Wolf,

No, need for the self doubt. You've got some good things going on with your MOC.

I really like the indigo and black section. It reminds me of the yellow sections on Black Falcon's Fortress and Black Knight Castle. It's always nice to give your castles a bit of a human touch. I also like the bricky look to the whole thing; it produces a more authentic look than you would get using large panels. The ivy on the tower is also a great touch. Finally, I like the dollhouse interior and the details you've included.

For a bit of criticism, I think you are doing two things that do not work well together. You are using 2x bricks and building at a rather small scale. Either one of those things can be great on their own, but using 2x bricks on a relatively small castle really limits your interior space. I realize you have to work with what's available, but this is something to keep in mind as your collection grows.

Now, for me... I don't have any impressive builds, but here's a little something I built for Halloween 2004 when everybody was on a Bruce-inspired vignette kick:

Countess Bathory
