Dear Lego: LOTR trolls with changeable battle armor

Post by SSchmidt »

Dear LEGO,

I love your LOTR line. It seems to be a major hit here in the USA where I dwell.
Your LOTR line means a lot to me. It brought me out of my dark age. As a matter of fact LEGO, I had not built a LEGO set in over 10 years until I had a TRU gift card that I had won on a gift card tree in an auction.
I had to spend it somehow LEGO, and when I saw Uruk-Hai army, and how massive Helms Deep was, I came back to the light.

In your LOTR line there is a set called "the Mines of Moria" which comes with a semi-Poseable cave troll, a very good recreation of the one in the movie.
However, you know LEGO, cave trolls appeared in the movies and books much more than Moria? Even then, many of them were fully equipped with wicked armor, strong helms, and different maces and clubs. One of them even wields a sword in Return of the King.

And so LEGO, I think it would be appropriate to have battle armor for these savage beasts. They look mighty cool in my army, but they all look exactly the same. Cave trolls are like humans, they are unique in appearances. They don't like to all look alike. They have feelings too.

I wish Lego, you would make armors and helms for cave trolls in different colors that could be inter-mingled to give an army of orcs unique cave trolls. Each cave troll could have it's unique appearance and not be identical to any other one. Cave trolls with different skins and different armors would be so fun. I would buy the worlds supply of them.

I realize LEGO, that my request will probably not be granted, but I thought I would ask you anyway :)

Love,
Your dear fan, (who just purchased his 3rd Moria today at a clearance endcap at a retail store, for another identical cave troll)

Samuel

As someone who likes to have armies of minifigs but tries to avoid having too many of them have the exact same clothes, armor, and weapons, I agree with this. It would give the trolls a lot more personality and flair, and that's never a bad thing.

There were a lot of variations of trolls in the movies.

I am currently experimenting with brick built troll armor, but it isn't going too well. I hope to get better with it. I would love different shapes and colors of helms, body armor, and vambraces.

Crafting weapons out of bricks for the trolls does seem easy enough though.

I'm guessing that the existing mold wasn't designed with body armor in mind, but perhaps this would be a good undertaking for one of our 3rd party friends such as Brick Warriors?

It's a good idea, in any case.

I would think that you are right on the molding.
I also agree this would be a cool project from our 3rd party vendors, although, due to the small appearance of the cave troll I don't know how well they would sell.

I am very interested to see if LEGO will use any more cave trolls in future LOTR sets.

This might be more of a "customization" comment than "Dear Lego", but have you considered making your own armor out of sculpy?

Well, just to be a lotr geek here, most of the trolls throughout the movie were actually either mountain trolls or olog-hai trolls. The only difference is that olog-hai dont turn to stone in daylight. Also, both mountain trolls and olog-hai are tan in color as opposed to pale blue.

That said, I think this is a great idea. I really wished lego had the sword-wielding olog-hai in the black gates set with full black armor, but alas. So, I think it would be really cool if some third-party vendor would undertake this. And maybe a troll sword too, because brick built swords dont really "cut it" for me ( )

I hadn't even considered it. In all honesty I am too intimidate to try any project like that.
I am currently working on large LEGO built shields for each of my trolls and it isn't going to bad. I do think creating armor for them would be the hardest part.

Seriously, new LEGO trolls would be great. I love having the Olog-Hai trolls fighting in RotK, they make the battle scenes that much more intense and deadly.
Unfortunately I don't have the Cave Troll so I can't experiment with armour, but if anyone comes up with a cool design then be sure to post it!

I am currently working on Tower shields for the trolls and different types of large maces and spears. I am trying to get a brick-built sword, but am really struggling.
I will post pictures of my progress when I get the chance.

I made some pretty cool trolls out of Rancors, I find they are more conducive to looking awesome in armor. Link below:
