Vikings 2.0 set designs and mocs

Post by Ferretclaw »

Ok I am not sure if this goes here or not, but... Can be moved to dear lego or LEGO castle sets catagorie if neccessary.

Ok, here is my idea, which is a to start a project, and perhaps put it on cuusoo if we want, of creating a wave or two of a LEGO Vikings 2.0 theme. There seems to be a lot of enthusiasm about this among many members, and I thought, well, I cant really count on TLG for anything, so I am building it myself. Now, one thing I would love is if some other members here want, they can design some sets/mocs of their own for it, and post them here, so we can get a relatively large scale theme up maybe. This is just largely for the fun of designing what you would want lego to have in vikings if they ever reintroduced the theme. Make a set as you would like to see it. :)

There are TONS of norse creatures still not made into sets. I have a list here of some I know of that I have pulled from memory and the internet. You an build these if you want and pair them with a viking tower/fortress/boat/siege weapon or something, like they did in the old sets. Or you can build a more historically accurate viking raid or hall or something of the like. Really do anything viking related you would like to see/have seen in vikings 1.0.

Dragons:
jormungand (sometimes classed as a serpent)
Ormar/Ormr
There is a dragon at the end of Beowulf called "the firedrake"
Grendel (sometimes classed as a troll)
And there are tons of non-nordic european dragons to use, such as:
Lindworm
Catalan
Balaur
Hydra

trolls/frost giants:
Grendel (sometimes classed as a dragon)
Ymir
Utgardsloki
Baugi

serpents:
Kraken
Andvari (giant pike-fish)
Jormungand (sometimes classed as a dragon)

wolves:
Garm
Moongarm
Skoll
Hati

other
Gullinbursti, who is a giant monstrous boar with golden spikes.
Surtr, a fire giant

There are also of course such norse races as Elves, Dwarves and Valkyries, not to mention other places in norse mythology, if you are going more for the legendary aspect as opposed to the historical one. Viking settlements could be fun to build too. Anyway, I will be doing this and it will be all the greater if any other viking theme enthusiasts would like to join in. Everyone can post your finished designs in this thread. :D If we want, we can post some or all of them on cuusoo in the unlikely hope of 10,000 supporters

This sounds like a really neat idea! I might give the Viking theme a shot sometime.

The only problem that I see with this going to Cuusoo is that TLG has been pretty resistant to accepting "themes" through the Cuusoo program. What they are really looking for is one set. Then, if it's really successful (Minecraft), they can create additional sets to go along with the original. This makes sense, because do you really think that try want to pay royalties on an entire product line? :?

Yeah. Its easy enough to single out a set and put it up, then we could set up a web page somewhere for the theme saying "if you want this theme to be a reality, please support this set on cuusoo here" or something of the like, for the sake of exposure... But like I said this is mostly just for fun :)

I have built a tower so far, and I will pair it with some kind of beast... As much as I like historical accuracy, I love the feel of the old sets and want to retain it. I have a plan for a kind of first wave that I would like to see, here:

Viking tower vs ? 2 headed dragon? -medium
Viking village vs ? Frost giant? -large
Viking warrior vs golden bristles- small
? Vs jormungand serpent- medium (some kind of boat?)

Its basically bringing back the old line, with a few more mythic creatures as well. And I think I will have to include my fell beast/black dragon moc somehow too :D

I can put up pictures of just the tower if you guys want, and add its monstrous counterpart later.

I dont mean to hijack the thread, but my favorite aspect of the original castle line is the "rapid fire" missile action. The design of those technic systems are ingenious. Do you see that feature being incorporated into what youre doing? Either way, I love the concept and would love to help!

Bit late, but oh well ;)
I love the whole Vikings ideas, and may well try to build some stuff myself at some point. TLG should seriously think about releasing more Vikings sets, it'd make their lines of sets way more interesting :)

Agreed.

Anyway, I am almost done with my first Viking themed moc. It will be up soon.
