Word of Mouth

It had been nearly a week since the tremors shook the land all over the Nortlen in varying degrees. To those north of the Glass Sea, the cause of these otherworldly shakings was still unknown. Temperatures all across the Middle Continent rose to an unnatural degree, and plant life reflected that accordingly. Flowers were once again in bloom, and trees were budding with the youthful green leaves of spring.

For many days and nights, Scott and Ryan trotted through the newly blooming forests through Dragon Valley. As confused as they were about their ever-changing surroundings, the ease of travel it granted them was very beneficial.

Although they knew they had been traveling very far, they knew not where they were. The only thing left to guide them was the road in front of them, leading them northwest towards the Black Forest. When the trees about them grew dark and thick, Scott figured, they would turn south and hope to catch some sign of civilization.

Weariness had become an issue for the travelers, who spent no time at all sleeping or resting. Each step they took was heavy, full of misery at the miles that lay between them and their destination.

Voices trailed through the trees while Scott and Ryan walked along the forest path. Creeping up slowly, the three travelers were ready to dispatch whatever belligerent force lay ahead of them. Holly padded just behind them.

The forms they were greeted by were not at all what they expected. Instead of a ragtag bunch of bandits and outlaws, the party happened upon a group of Dragon Kingdom soldiers on patrol in the region that had set up camp in a small clearing.

Three soldiers stood around a campfire, while a standard bearer tended to the horse that their commander had ridden on. The commander was a middle-aged man with massive facial hair and a jolly face, who wore a dark green cloak that flew behind him when he walked.

“Well well well, what do we have here?” the commander bellowed out upon noticing the strangers walking their way. Two of the soldiers looked up curiously, with their hands closed around their weapons.

“We’re weary travelers, pay us no mind.” Scott solemnly stated, his tiredness evident in his eyes, which were hollow and exhausted.

“We can certainly help with that! Come, have something to eat and drink with us! Tell us your tale!” the commander excited beckoned for them, the rest of his troop mirroring his excited countenance. “Ah, pardon my manners! The name’s Reginald! I am commander of this troop!”

Scott and Ryan introduced themselves before stepping over to join those sitting by the fire. Ryan, before he could fully formulate what he was saying, asked “Hey, do you fellows know the cause behind those terrible shakings about a week back?”

Scott shot him a cold glance. Clearly, the blue-clad wanderer did not want to become entrapped in conversation with their new acquaintances, no matter how nice they were.

Reginald began to say, “Well, to be fair, none of us have had any real confirmation about any of-“

“I think the Gods are truly sick of our warring and killing, and that was the beginning of the end!” the standard bearer piped up, cutting off his commander.

“You’re crazy, Peter! It’s clear that the shakings were cause by the massive sea beast finally awakening within the Glass Sea! Why do you think so many ships were sent out from the coast south? They’re off to slay the fiend!” The one drinking from a goblet said.

“You couldn’t be more wrong, Thomas!” said the one who still held his shield and sword close to his body, “It’s the rumblings of the Crown Kingdom’s hidden army, come back to reclaim their kingdom from the vicious usurpers! The frightened fisherman explained it to us on our way out of Carlien!”

“If that’s so, why haven’t we heard them since? Did they go on the march for a few minutes, and nothing more?” stated the one who sat and was eating an apple.

“Be quiet, Jerold! You don’t know the answer any more than Peter does!” Thomas replied.

“HEY!” Reginald shouted, and all fell silent. “This is not the proper way to greet our guests, by filling their heads with rumors heard from townsfolk! Now, as I was saying, we don’t know any more than you do. Ships have been sent out at the King’s request, and ships from neighboring kingdoms have been sent out as well. We should hear word of it upon their return.”

Despite himself, Scott smiled. Although he was not any more informed than he was beforehand, the resurfacing of human contact was enough to raise his spirits dramatically. Maybe the journey back won’t be so bad after all, he pondered.

The next installment! It's clear that something happened in the Falcon Kingdom, and that something is causing commotion all over the Nortlen. But what exactly is it? :spin: Next chapter will be up before you know it! C&C welcome! :)

Very nice little scene you have here, it fits the setting from the story well. Nice job.

Great job! Those were some wild rumors, hopefully they can get to the bottom of it soon.
