I'm with you. I've never had a huge amount of money to buy lego with, so I've always stuck with the small/medium sets. But I'm saving up, and I have almost $200 :D , so when I get back to the US in 6 months I'm going to the lego store for an $100+ haul. I'm not buying them where I'm living now because A: lego is WAY more expensive here, and B: we're going to have a tough time fitting what lego we have into the suitcases :o

I try to budget things out when I know there are going to be good deals. Black Friday, and just before and after Christmas are pretty good. There is almost always a double VIP month in March and October, so those are good months to get the expensive exclusives.

I tend to be more of an impulse buyer and have had to set limits on what I can spend each month (which isn't much). I've had to look closely at what I really want, and what I can afford, and it's really tough having to cut things. But, in the end I find that I've saved more money by saying "no" to the sets/purchases that I don't really need than I would by getting a good deal on something that is going to sit and rarely get used. Having a balanced budget is also much less stressful in the long run as well. :)

Yeah.. But the deals don't take into account budgets.... I'm about 3 months in debt on my budget ;). These past few weeks have just been full of amazing surprising deals and opportunities...

I feel you ludzik!

My philosophy is "buy now or forever hold your peace."

Being the case, I always have a large enough reserve LEGO fund to purchase whatever I want, whenever I find a deal.

For example, In January I bought Tower of Orthanc, Medieval Market Village, 6 Castle Forest Ambushes, the ice cream truck and castle set from the Lego movie, the Grand Emporium, and quite a few other sets actually.

But I didn't plan on buying any of these.
-Grand Emporium is getting harder to find, so when I saw it on Walmart.com for its MSRP price of $149.99, I didn't care to pull the trigger.
-Tower of Orthanc came up in "good condition" on Amazon Warehouse Deals (AWD) for $162.xx. I couldn't pass that up.
-Medival Market Village came up in "repackaged good" condition on AWD for $121.xx. That set is hard to find at that price.
-Walmart.com had dropped the price one week for the Forest Ambush for $8.75. I'm a huge fan of both factions, so I bought 6.
-I was able to get the Lego movie sets from TRU for $19.99 respectively during a $20 off $75 sale.

That's a lot of money! Now, i'm not a millionare so I can't afford this type of buying consistently. This pas Super Bowl Sunday, I had 26 different LEGO auctions end on Ebay of various sets and individual pieces, etc. The total I received (not counting shipping) was $628.xx

Once this fund starts getting low, I will list more LEGO and rinse, repeat. This way, I can keep on buying things as I want them, and reselling the sets, individuals I don't really want.

BTW, in Lamanda's selling out thread I have already accumulated a tab over $100.xx :halo:

Budget, budget, budget. Depending on what life changes are in your future such as graduation from college/high school, type of career and continual employment, learning to budget now will ease you pain in the future. Another thing that helps is narrowing my LEGO focus. As much as I would like to build in Castle, Space, and Town, money wise that will never happen. So, for LEGO, Castle it is.

When a year's LEGO offerings ends, say when the Crown/Fantasy line was not showing anymore new figures, I take stock of what I have. I ask myself, do I have enough leader type figures? Do I have enough soldier figures? Do I have enough extra for future "hero/adventurer" figures? If I do I start saving my money for the next faction, which in this example would be the Kingdoms Lion/Dragon sets/figures. Fast forward to now when I am saving money for the next factions after the current Lions/Dragons ends.

But even with all the planning and budgeting, life will keep throwing you those curve balls, that's just inevitable.

This isn't as much about LEGO as it is about having too little money for all the fun you want to have, which, however deplorable, isn't really the purpose of this forum. There are plenty of good discussions and tips regarding how to find good deals or regarding good strategies for getting what you need and want on a tight budget around these forums, and I refer you to these. This topic, however, is now locked.
