The Nest Stirs

The city of Lindford was oft very quiet in the early hours of the morning, when the shadow of night still drew itself across the world. Few stirred at such an early hour, Walter being one of those few.

In his home, Walter paced back and forth across the rug draped on the stiff wooden floor. It was another night of worry, another night of staying awake until the sun peaked over the city walls and bathed his abode in glimmering sunlight.

On nights where Walter did not sleep, something terrible or anxiety inducing was soon to come in the morning following. This night was no exception, as he was dimly aware of a certain unease in the air, which only dragged him further from the sweet embrace of sleep.

Something… it is something. That is certain. But what? He pondered, his thoughts stumbling over one another.

His wooden home was thickly built, as most homes in the north were. A single grated window let him look out onto the street beyond, but he dared not look. This close to the keep there were bound to be guards about, and he didn’t want them to worry about him. Walter was the royal advisor, and if the guards caught him losing sleep and pacing madly, they might alert the king. The last thing Walter needed was the King scolding him in the harsh tone he was all too familiar with.

All about the room were various artifacts that Walter had gathered over the years from all over the three continents. Gold sculptures from Malnova Urbo, scepters and maces from the Lost Isles, and even a rug woven in the Bat Kingdom. Old and new, Walter could certainly be described as worldly.

Suddenly there came a quick and startling rapping on the door. Walter stopped in his tracks, his breath catching in his throat. He could feel his heart pounding against his sternum, and he waited. Waited for something, but he could not think of what.

The knocking began again, more frantic this time. Walter began to inch closer to the door, close enough that he could feel the moderate chill of the nighttime air.

“Come in, whoever you are.” He whispered, just loud enough for the outsider to wriggle the doorknob and open the door, revealing a figure clad in midnight cloth draped in a scarlet cloak.

“I figured you would be awake at this hour, Walter.” Said Archibald, taking the liberty on himself to enter. He tapped his staff against the floor as he strolled in, shutting the door behind him.

“Yes, well, sleep often evades me, as much as I wish it were not so.” Walter sighed as he finished, just as a quizzical look crawled across his face. “Do tell me, why is it that you are awake at this hour?”

“I was woken by one of my priests, who works in the rookery. He apologized profusely for the disturbance, but bade me to follow him and read the letter received. It comes from Gotharc, and I have brought it here for you to read.” Archibald pulled a small folded paper from his robes, and placed it on the decorated table.

Walter sat himself on the stool and unfolded the letter. There were two sheets, and he began to read the first. It read:

“Dear High Priest of the Wyvern Order,
I write to you, as one brother of the Faith to another, with grave news that I hope reaches you in Lindford soon.
The Emperor is dead, having suffered from an illness for quite some time. If we had been able to procure apothecaries sooner, I would have never had to send this letter. Unfortunately, Thomas made sure that no such help was given to his dear father, no doubt as part of a massive plot of his.
Regardless, his father did not die without final wishes, which he dictated to me to carry out. These final wishes I have included in this letter, for they do pertain to you. Please aid me in my quest to fulfill my late Emperor’s requirements, and in my quest to protect and save the Lion Empire.
The final will should be attached to this letter. If it is not, then all hope is lost.
Sincerely,
-Patrick”

Walter looked up at Archibald, eyeing him skeptically. Taking note of his caution, Archibald explained:

“I have met Patrick before, long ago at some celebration. I was a mere novice priest then, and he was still the High Priest of the Lion Order. He is an old man; I would never expect him to remember my name. For this reason, I deem the letter legitimate. Continue reading.”

Walter pulled forth the will beneath the letter. It had a massive seal stamped onto it, the mark of the Lion Emperor. There was no doubting of this document’s legitimacy. It read:

“To whom it may concern,
This is the final will and wishes of I, Edward VI, Emperor of Lions. All of these dictations should be carried out specifically as they are written, or else those who deny me shall forever be at the forefront of the Great Beings’ wrath.
In regards to the Crowned Lion Kingdom, I hereby dictate that the lands to the east of the White River be given to the Dragon Kingdom, to do with as they wish, whether it be instill their dominion or return it to the Crown King in exile.
In regards to the continued expansion of the Lion Empire, I hereby command that it be ceased, in all the kingdoms of my dominion. Progressing any further would incur the combined wrath of our new subjects, condemning us to fall.
And finally, in regards to the line of succession, I hereby dictate that my seat on the Gold Throne be passed onto my daughter, Cordelia, so that she may be crowned Empress Cordelia I of the Lion Empire. My son, Thomas II, may be crowned King of the Middle Lion Kingdom, subject to Empress Cordelia, if he so wishes, or can remain in line for the Imperial Throne in the event that my daughter perishes.
I also hereby recant my violent nature and horrible acts I committed in the name of conquest, and forever beg for the forgiveness of those I have wronged. While I forever believe in the justified creation of the Lion Empire, I regret the means by which I achieved it.”

Below the text was the Lion Emperor’s signature and wax seal. Walter’s shaking finger ran over the seal, feeling its grooves and ridges. Although he was terrified of the news that he learned, he was glad he no longer had to wait for the day’s awful events to begin.
