Forced or no?

Post by Luke the Swift~ »

Hey I just entered this in another contest:

Image
This is the scene from the first hobbit where, Radagast has a run in with the necromancer.
The Category was Forced perspective. It has been scoring really low! Let me all know what you think and, if you have any suggestions on what I might try to improve it. I was told it was too basic.

Well, as I am not a judge on this website, I can critique it.

Well, I liked the shadow, but it is barely a forced perspective. You have a minifig in the front, and in the back is another minifig that is supposed to be the forced perspective, but is the same size. For a really good example of forced perspective, look at this:

Image

Now, I don't want you to start comparing your creations and skills to his, as his skills are far better than a lot of good people I know. Just look at this creation and see what building techniques he used, and try and apply it to your creations. Now, I know that it probably won't be as good (I could never build anything THAT good, but hold your head up high, and whatever you build, if YOU like it, it is good!) as his, but again, don't compare.

Now, your build is nice, but it could use a lot more detail, but this is a nice entry all in all! It just isn't what us judges are looking for, we want more of a forced perspective.

I hope this helps Luke, and doesn't sound to critical! :)

Matt chose the perfect picture there, so don't compare your entry against that one, because I don't think that many people could build a MOC like that! I like your entry, good luck!

One minor nitpick of mine is Radagast' s staff is brown, not gold and red. Otherwise, I think it's not quite forced perspective, but a good build nonetheless :)

Luke,

What matt dipicted is a great example of forced perspective. Another hobby I have we used forced perspective all the time and it is a fairly easy concept to understand once you do. In model railroading an other things force perspective is used to give an illusion of depth and distance in a small space. For example you have a shelf tyat is 18" deep your running in ho scale which is 1:87, no you want to show a farm house in the distance what do you do? Well use a N or Z scale house on the hill. N SCALE IS 1:160, Z is 1:220. Thus by placeing the smaller scale on the hill you force the illusion of distance.

Hope this helps.

Hey,

Another good resource on forced perspective is to look at the bonus features on the Fellowship of the Ring DVD. There's a whole feature on how they filmed the relative sizes of hobbits vs men etc. For instance, they built two versions of the same set, one big, one small. First they film Ian McKellen walking through a door that is four feet tall, then they film Elijah Wood walking through a door that looks the exact same, but is actually six feet tall. Then you edit the footage together and it looks like Gandalf is so tall he's banging his head on the ceiling of Frodo's home. They did other tricks, like putting some characters closer to the camera and others further away, so it looks like elves and men are tall and hobbits and dwarves are short.

Nice build!
I would recommend you use forced perpective on the cave entrance instead of the white background, but the build is very nice nevertheless! :)

Two comments, 1 LEGO related, one on my pet peeve.

I don't really think this is obvious forced perspective. I agree with mpoh, I think the key is to have something in the FAR away background that is quite large built quite small.

On to my biggest gripe, the grammar. "Forced or no?" represents a grammar atrocity that is sweeping the globe. When you offer more than one options as you have here, they should be "parallel". Really you are asking a question here, "Is this forced perspective or is this NOT forced perspective?". You could shorten that to, "Forced or NOT?", but when you reconstruct the question you are asking as you have asked it it becomes, "Is this forced perspective or no forced perspective?", you can see how silly it sounds. Believe me, you are not the first nor will you be the last to commit this atrocity on the English language, but if I can stop even one person from doing this, I'll be a happy person.

It does keep me up at night.

Do you think it should keep me up at night, or no?

Should I let it go, or no?
