A long time ago, Robinhood and I had a discussion about a crossbow being one of the most vile weapons in existence. He said only the most evil would use one. I can honestly say that I had not thought about that. So when I was thinking about a topic for June, I thought..hey we all have opinions about weapons so lets talk about them.
When I build, most of my knights end up with spears, unless it is my desert army, they get swords. I'm not sure why. But it seems that those are the ones I just grab for.
In real life, I think I'm drawn to swords...but I would totally be the klutz that I am and do untold damage to myself. So I shant be owning one of them. I guess blame the romanticized versions of Excaliber and others.
If I had a weapon of choice for me for real...I'm going Tangled...yep...frying pans...who knew? Or nerf.

Re: June: A discussion of Weapons
Whenever I set up a castle wall and put the minifigs on top, I make sure that they're all holding a bow, crossbow or spear. (I suppose if one of the spearmen throws their spear, they will be left without a weapon, but hey—at least they're still on top of the wall.) Swords, lances and other non-ranged weapons won't really do them any good when they're atop the wall. I don't know if public spectators ever notice that I've done that, but I do know that every once in a while, someone will notice the knight with a lightsaber that I've snuck in with the others.
If a group of minifig fighters all have the same or similar outfit, I try to make sure they're fighting with the same type of weapons (all longswords, all scimitars, etc.) For example, My mounted knights all have lances, and my skeleton army all wield the same trans-neon green spears.
The group of minifigs that I have the most variety with is my Vikings. However, even with them, there are tribes. The red armed ones always get spears, and the dark blue armed ones always get axes. All the others (reddish brown, dark green, black and yellow arms) can get anything from swords to flails to Fabuland woodcutters axes. Then there's that one Viking that holds a pair of tommy guns.
I really do need to experiment and get creative with making more elaborate minifig weapons. I've seen someone use an ice skate blade to make a bardiche type of weapon. Now that we have that new 1X1 pyramid/slope piece, I think it could be used to make excellent war hammers. LEGO finally gave us a spiked mace, but there are also ways to make flanged maces. Most of the multi-part weapons I've created are longer spears made from the 6long bar, a lightsaber handle and a harpoon spike.

Re: June: A discussion of Weapons
I like swords. Swords are my favorite, in real life, and in minifig form. And the newest CMF Knight has a VERY nice new sword.
When equipping my armies, I like to get a variety. Almost every army has some spearmen, swordsmen, axeman, mounted knight, archer.
I used to hate the crossbows when I was young. Probably because it was the most common weapon I had amongst my castle figures. Not to mention it's no fun to have minifigs fight with crossbows.

I don't really have a preference or favorite. I let the content or story of the MOC inform the weapon choices. A joust build just wouldn't work most of the time if one of the jousters had a lance and the other a dagger!

Whoops I'm late.
I prefer to give my soldiers spears when I can but don't care for the solid color ones. I think the Lord of the Rings spears are the best and actually look realistic. The LoTR swords are a close second, though, and much more common so I often end up using those. Of course, if someone is in a tower he'll have proper torso printing and a crossbow.

Re: June: A discussion of Weapons
I would say my favorite weapon would be the Lance since I love Heavy Cavalry. Although I do equip my army with a variety of weapons, especially the ground troops.
Below are pics of my army with lances:
