RIP Fraslund

Post by Formendacil »

The Brothers-Brick had a post yesterday announcing the passing of David Frank. The name meant nothing to me, but someone who'd been active in the community over a decade, was a Brickconner, and had a giant castle behind him had to have been a member here in our more hectic years. And, yes, it turns out he was here under the username Fraslund. With 337 posts, he was active between 2010 and 2015, including participating in the CCC. His death sounds to have been sudden and he left behind a family.

Hey,

I just saw that on Brothers-Brick as well. I didn't recall the real-life name, but clicking through to his Flickr stream I remembered the MOCs, and that led to the handle Fraslund he used here, which I certainly did remember. He was an active member here for a time, participated in lots of discussions and a few CCC's, and made some incredible (and huge!) castles. I remember interacting with him talking about different build techniques and MOCs, and also about forum management as he helped set up another online LEGO forum. One of the things that really sucks about getting older is that there are a bunch of AFOLs and TFOLs I've gotten to know over the years, at least virtually, who we have since lost.

As you can tell from the write-up and from his photos, he was a family man and building with his wife and kids was a big part of his hobby. Here are just a few of my favorites from his builds:

This may be my favorite ever Castle Grayskull. I'm pretty sure I featured it on the front page years ago.

This was one of his CCC entries. The hustle and bustle of this dock scene is great.

As described in the BB write-up, his wife wrote a novel, and he built several MOCs based on settings in her story, including this home. The use of vegetation and color here is amazing.

And of course, since it's me, I have to point out this Hobbiton that he built as part of a big layout with his LUG.

A little late in posting, but I actually did know him a little bit. Met him at Brickcon a couple of times. I certainly recognized him instantly. Very saddening to see him pass away.

IDK why I didn't think to come over here to collectively mourn with those who might have remembered David, back when he passed this summer. He was a good friend and LUG-mate of mine and we collaborated on a few Lego projects together. I attended his funeral with a few other CC members and it was a really nice service. He clearly had a huge impact on his friends both within and outside the Lego community. He was sorely missed at BrickCon this year and those of us who were close to him still think of him hope to see him again someday on the other side.

RIP David :halo:

I held off with replying to this mostly because the epic level of sadness I feel when I think of David. I met him at Brickcon. And I had the pleasure to keep getting to know him each year. He was truly a friendly, happy person which amazing building skills.
