CCC XIX: Everdell Castle

Post by soccerkid6 »

Winter wouldn't be the same without building a CCC entry, and this year I was blessed to be able to visit family and collaborate on this build with LittleJohn :D

It was inspired by the art on the ‘castle’ card from the board game Everdell. It had been too long since we were able to build together, and this made for a very fun project over the winter holidays. Have to recommend Everdell as a fun board game with some beautiful artwork too!

Thanks for looking, and happy new year everyone :)

Nice copy!! I really nice the curving of the reddish brown pieces at the bottom of the trunk. Nicely made :eyebrows: . I also like the lantern posts at the front of the castle :D
Bishons,

The key to good MOC building is a large brain and a kinda big wallet

Man, I like those flags SK. Overall this is one of the more unique castle MOCs I've seen in a while; you and John did a great a job here!

The white of the snow and the purple of the doors/banners offset the warmth of the wood perfectly. Really unique take, and I love the little front door guardian!

Hey Isaac and John,

Standard disclaimer - Now that judging is done I can comment on individual contest entries. These are my thoughts only and do not reflect those of other judges. I won't give my exact scores for entries, how they ranked in my estimation, or how other judges scored them (actually, I don't know how the other judges scored them as Blue collected and added up the scores).

This was a really fun entry for the contest category, and I'm happy you guys were able to get a chance to build together.

Pros: I really liked the creative parts usage. Looking at the wooden palisade I see a whip, some spears, a musket, a broom, and other parts, making it look like this was put together from logs of varying sizes. The way the logs slope out at the base of the central gatehouse make it seem like that comes from a tree stump. I also really love that you created a livery out of those shield tiles and the crown piece, and then much larger with a purple cape and some gold pieces. Your "soldiers" are just adorable. Now I want like fifty penguins to outfit for my army. Another nice part use I see is a grey hat as a rock, and the various white elements used as snow along the top of the palisade. The contrast between the rough snow and rocks and the completely smooth ice is great, also the reflection you get in that ice. Along the side of the walkway there are like a million 3-long bars - are those just held in by friction, or is something holding those? If friction, I can imagine that must have been really frustrating to build.

Cons: For the "castle" category, this one suffered because it was not a fully enclosed castle. I would have loved to see this idea extended and wrap around, with a motte in the middle with a keep on top. I don't try to judge on "what I'd like to have seen", but this suffered in relation to other entries in the category that were full castles. I'm a little confused on what the sand green arms represent. Are those the stems of some plants?
