Interesting find on eBay...buyer beware...

Post by ed_dotcom »

Interesting that this guy would want to make money on what lugnet, bricklink, and classic-castle (among others) give for free...

Actually, BrickShelf is the only site I am aware of that has legally posted scans of LEGO instructions.

I've never seen LEGO instruction scans posted on LUGNET, BrickLink, or Classic-Castle. They aren't allowed to do it, and they don't.

Also, selling scans of official LEGO instructions is illegal.

It is legal to sell instructions you make for your own creations. I know Daniel Siskund does that.

They all link to Brickshelf though, right?

So in that sense, they would be providing instructions, although not hosting them.

That's beside the main point though, which is that this guy is really.....

Hmm... How to say it accurately without being offensive?

Yes it is. LEGO copyrights all of their instructions and Brickshelf has special permission to have them. I remember there being a store on Bricklink selling recreated sets with printed instructions and a big uproar happened. Most people that sell sets without instructions on ebay usually say they'll provide a link where they can find the instructions, which I think they are referring to Brickshelf.

You are correct that only brickshelf.com can legally host the building instructions and catalog scans. They have a liscensing agreement and we do not. We would like to get one and may contact LEGO in the future to have catalog and poster scans (many of which brickshelf is missing) on CC. Selling these instructions is very unethical. But because it is about buying I will move this thread to BST.
