6080 castle is representative of first stone castles. (Before about 1000 they were made of wood).

People like it because it's realistic. Because it's big and there is many place for playing in. Moreover, it can be open and join with other modular sets. 6086 even if it is really nice, can't be open and is not modular. 6086 represent more the end of middle age castles. It is realistic too, but not as much as 6080.

First castle were made of square tower too.

Hi everybody,

I'm really happy that everybody so much enjoy this debate. Beside a week in London and a week in south of Spain, I havn't been to Europe, so I hardly saw in my own eyes real castles (only on books and movies). I'm a history freak and I now history pretty well though I never studied history in academia, so I love to hear others view about the subject.
I was pretty sure that the rivalry will be between 6080, 6074 and 375/6075.
Obviously I was mistaken  a really close race I must add.

Now why I love 6080:
1. In my eyes this is how a real castle look like. I must add that when I were little I saw this anime series which according to what I remember, a castle exactly like that was there. Again I was very little and I couldn't find that series on the net and I'm probably mistaken. When I saw 6080 for the first time (at my friend place) I was shocked how realistic it was (again to that same castle on the anime series).

2. Was my first castle. With that castle my obsession to castles and LEGO castles began. I guess you had to be there...

3. A very big castle, 664 pieces, 12 minifigs and 4 horses. Included a lot of light gray bricks and 30 wall pieces. On 1984-1987 it was the biggest castle ever made, comparing to 6073/6074 that the Black Falcons had.

4. Her back rooks can rotate 180 degrees.

5. As others said it can combine with:
6061 - Siege Tower (a must have expansion set to combine to it)
6040 - Blacksmith Shop
6041 - Armor Shop
6067 - Guarded Inn
6081 - King's Mountain Fortress

and I guess it can be combined also with the BF castles 6073/6074
and also 6062 (the expansion set to 6074).

I guess most of those things you can say also on 6085 though for some reason the front of 6080 castle is more attractive (in my eyes) then 6085.

As for 6086, don't get me wrong, I llike that castle, it took me ages to get a hold of one, the 2 rooks are great, included nice army, I even like the rasied base plate, but something with the front gate of it doesn't look real to me, something with the red roof there and the tower on the gate (the same btw with 6085).

If I had to vote for the 2nd most real I'll probably go with 6074 or (and I know my head is about to beheaded when I'll say this) 6090 (although it's not fortified enough I guess). I still don't know why it's considered fiction (beside it's unrealistic lion symbol).

Long live History, Long live LEGO Castles... (just not ones that looks like 8781)

BTW: My ICQ number is available if anyone wants to chat.

I know this is off-topic but...

I was just wondering how long this website forum here has been running? It seems that every day I see new users on the forums. Now I know what you're thinking: "But Dan, you ARE a new user so of course you see new people all the time." But I mean new people with 0-3 posts or something like that.

Hi Dan,

The forum began on September 7th, 2003, but it was not publicly announced until several days after that. Currently we have 168 members and it is hard to keep track of everyone. Plus we usually have 1-2 people join each day.

If you have a question like this it is great. Please just post a new topic in Administrative or General Lego and we will be happy to answer it. Thanks. :D

I voted for the 6080. To me, it's the most castley looking...but man some of the other choices are very cool too.

Trust me, I think I'm funnier than you do.
Why do I have to add the word "minifig" to my spell checker every time I use it?!

Hello!

I voted 6086: It is asymmetric, it has a well, it has a house, it has a drawbridge and a portcullis, it's built upon a hill. It almost looks like a castle in the Rhine area in Germany.

6080 is quite realistic, too, except for its lack of quarters. And so is 6085, though the colour is not really appropriate.

Coyote already described why 6081 is also realistic.

And 6074 looks like a château alongside the Loire.

Out of all of these, I'm split between the King's moutain fortress and the Black monarch's castle. The King's castle is nice, but it strikes me as two sparse. All you see there is a square gray blob.

Exactly.

6080 was always some sort of Normanic castle imo like those from oldschool knights' movies starring Robert Taylor.

Coyote has done it again. 6081 for Castle realism. But, I just cant get 6086 out of my head. I understand the topic is for realism, but do most Castle fans really prefer 6080 over the rest? This set has always just reminded me of a square and without the add ons, there really isnt too much about it.

just my 2 cents.............

6080 is much like a French castle in Perpignan, shrunk extremely.

And Carcasonne in France looks quite a bit like the King Leo Knights Kingdom I castle

Hello
I voted for the 6090 (castle of the knights royaux)because it has a large entry of square form (what was common)and a wall before completely honourable.
The only bad thing is that the back wall is too small but it is nevertheless very well.

Well, you can introduce that many castles had a weak back wall, some of them even had just palisades. That's mainly because they were built on hills; and roads heading the gates but not the back walls which were protected by landscape (ever climbed a 60° hill?).

My hometown castle, Altenburg, for example has a backwall with a height from about 3 meters; 1 meter is a stone base and 2 meters are wood palisades. Not very strong when you suppose the front side with 10m of pure sandstone ...
But the backside ist "protected" by a little forrest and a steep slope with very sticky underground. Guards could keep hostile soldiers in line from their point, big weapons also couldn't be placed there (because of the trees they couldn't target the wall, either).

Of course it's never a good choice to weaken a castle at a special spot ... but - as for today - even people of former times sometimes ran out of stones ;-)

hometown castle
man you're lucky.

that would just be cool!

I love my country, but unfortunately we do not have the history of the oldworld. Well the inca and aztec had some impressive forts if you wanna count that, i guess.
