Crusader's Trebuchet v2

Post by jb »

The crusaders' are back with a bigger and more powerful trebuchet:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=70480

They improved upon their original design
(http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=64933) and can now launch 2x2
round bricks at the enemy from as far away as 6 (human) ft.

This trebuchet uses a LEGO boat weight for the counterweight and my patented
minifig hand release pin mechanism. Unfortunately, it uses a non-LEGO pouch,
which is just a piece of construction paper that I have softened up.

Here are the deep links:

Loaded and ready to unleash destruction:

Trigger and pin mechanism:

The pouch ready to fire:

Unloaded:

Enjoy!

James

P.S. I just sent this to Lenny, so anyone who is going to PDX can check this out
in person.

Very nice looking machine. I'm impressed by the range, too.

Do you have other pics of the trigger mechanism? I just can't make out how you get it to work.

I remember me and my dad making one out of wood. and it worked =P. We shop a soccer ball a mile and a half. And then we gave it away because he had to move :(

Lone Ranger,

Wow, how big was your trebuchet? Does anyone watch Junkyard Wars (I believe it's called Scrap Heap Challenge in the UK)? There was one where they had to build trebuchets.

That's a great trebuchet! Could you make instructions for it? If you could make instructions for, that would be awsome! For some reason, all my trebuchets\catapults that I build can't fire a round 1x1 brick more than three feet!

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the comments. The 'trigger' is a piece of string that is fixed on one side and spans over the arm when it is in the loaded position and can be tied off on the other side on the modified 1x1 plate or just let go to release the arm. You should be able to make sense of it now. The minifig hand is used to make the pouch release at the right time. (http://www.ripcord.ws/howslingswork.html). I'm going to work up a how-to pretty soon. I am working on instructions now.

Hello!

Yeah! This Trebuchet looks great! Really cool.
Though... Why do the Lions own it again? My poor Falcons are sooo unprotected! *sniff*
(They do not even have a castle right now. That means, the Lions do not need any siege engines...)

Bye
