Market Day at the Castle

Continuing my modular castle/town ideas ...

The minifigs are thin on the ground as I don't own that many! Next time I'll leave mine in the box and use James' small assortment.

After taking these, we ripped the layout apart and added James' castle, walls, buildings, etc for a much larger scene

The market place looks really good with the castle, but you may want to include some shrubs,animals,trees, etc. in your moc because it looks a bit dull. These will spice up your moc.

Wow, that is so cool that you can do that! That's what modularity is all about. The market set-up was good too. I think that if you were to bunch everything closer together you'd get more of that crowded effect.

And thanks for giving me ideas for my own town/castle. I'm trying to have a sea-side creation, and I've struggled to come up with an idea for the port side. I think you've cracked the code for me. Thanks.

I like the market idea, but agree it could be a bit more crowded.Just tell everyone it is depicting early in the morning. Our local market looks pretty quiet first thing in the morning ...

Perhaps adding a pen for animals in the center or one end with the people market along the walls or towards the walls would use up some of the green space and allow you to compress the people and market.

I also really like your modular ideas for castle. I have been working on this idea as well, (kudos to you and others who have posted pics/designs) but have been stumbling because I want the walls to be able to join at an angle other than 90 degrees.

I think your set up looks great and has some excellent ideas. Hope you don't mind if I borrow some

Quick update ...

.. the market and surrounding enclosure castle are being re-planned and expanded to be displayed at two shows (one in May the other in July) - it will be 11x11 modules (where a module is a 16x16 stud baseplate), or just under 5 feet square

... its grown too big for my building room, so I'm going to have to work on it in sections

... the market has gained a moot hall to act as the focal point

... and I "borrowed" a few of James Stacey's houses after the last show (actually I'm LDrawing them for him)

... and I purloined a few ideas for the watermill

Yes, just say that it's early in the morning. After all, merchants are still coming in with their goods. I really like how you did the farm goods; they look perfect.

They could use some hair... I love how you've used the different patterns on the slope bricks to make different coverings. The jousting area is a nice touch, but could use some landscaping to make for a smoother grass-gravel transition. I like how you can see into the hall alongside it. Having the port right next to the market is a good idea, and I really like how the new one is turning out!

Great-looking stuff there.

What really caught my eye is the scale of your walls- an excellent job, in my opinion. It's just enough bigger than the classic scale of a real LEGO set that it looks similar in style, but it's big enough that you won't be jumping your horses over the walls during a siege.

I like it... though I must admit I miss the pallistade (sp?) from the earlier versions...

The palisade belongs to James Stacey, so is only present when James can make the shows as well.

With the exception of two of the free-standing houses, all the rest is mine
