Why so sinister?

Post by SavaTheAggie »

I was looking at the Lord Vladek figure on my desk at work here, and noticed that he's sinister. And then I realized that all of the large KK2 figs are sinister, both 1st and 2nd editions.

So that got me thinking, and I began looking at the cover art to the KK2 sets and found that almost always, the good knights were sinister and yet Vladek was almost never (and possibly never, wasn't a 100% check) depicted as sinister.

I then went further back to see if LEGO had a fascination with being sinister, but it seems to be a relatively new thing. Very few figs have been sinister up until KK2, with the exception of the occassional archer, but you really have to know the proper ins and outs of archery to tell.

So here I ponder... Why has LEGO made their figs so sinister lately? Is it the new, hip thing?

Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
But it rocks absolutely, too.
I've got nothing against this whole bad guy thing. They're much more colourful then the plain old goody two shoe people. That and they're unpredictable, they can do whatever they want when they want. Unlike good guys.

Do you mean that they are sinister as in left-handed sinister or evil sinister?
I never noticed this but on close inspection I saw that the Bioniclish Jelly-Bean Knights all seemed to be left-handed.

Ah you mean being of The True Beings of Earth? (seriously, we have been so hated in all cultures I think I and we others deserve it).

If you mean left-handed sinister I understand. Actually, Ive heard something about a fighting style under the medieval times were you must have the weapon in the left hand to work, but I dunno if its true. Hard to find evidence so I expect its a lie.

Wow...

I have no idea what you guys are talking about. :P

What exactly does sinister mean then?

Hi guys!

I think sinister means evil, tricky, and cruel.

I remember Sam Sinister from Adventurers Lego. He was pretty sinister if you ask me.

It can mean several things, according to Dictionary.com:
1. Suggesting or threatening evil: a sinister smile.
2. Presaging trouble; ominous: sinister storm clouds.
3. Attended by or causing disaster or inauspicious circumstances.
4. On the left side; left.
5. Heraldry. Situated on or being the side of a shield on the wearer's left and the observer's right.

I think it is pretty clear that Tony means "sinister" as the synonym for "left-handed".

Otherwise, his post makes no sense...

Sinister people have always been hip, LEGO just wasn't hip enough to know it yet.

Well, speaking as a lefty, I say, Right On Lego! It seems somehow satisfying to know that they are all, or mostly, leftys. Especially since leftys were once force to be right.

Sinister comes from the Latin word "Sinister" meaning both left-handed and ill-omened.

As a "lefty" I like the left-handedness. I think it's cool.

I haven't noticed the knights in KK2 being particulary sinister, but I have noticed it in the Shadow nights and Vladek being so.

Hey, did you know that left handed people are in their right minds? I don't like the idea of LEGO Castle guys holding their swords in the right hand. It's not historically accurate :x

So you mean that the ones designing Bohusläns Stronghold where crazy when putting the arrow-slits on the right side and saying "this will be effective since the enemy will hold the swords in the right hand and have problems protect against this", and why did the Swedes then hold the swords in the right hand?

Really? Are you serious? If so, I didn't know that... I can't believe it's true... :?:
