Update! Custom Faction: Steel Fire

Post by Azaghal »

One day, I decided that it would be useful to have a LEGO classic broadsword in heraldic form. A bit of drawing got me this:
Image

Eventually, I expanded it into a complete line of minifig accessories-

Torso: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Azagh ... dtorso.jpg

Triangle Shield: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Azagh ... shield.jpg

Oval Shield: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Azagh ... shield.jpg

Cape: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Azagh ... rdcape.jpg

Book: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Azagh ... rdbook.jpg

What do you think?

Cool, but i think the hilt is too wide. Just my opinion.

That's pretty cool, but I agree the hilt is sort of wide, or it might be the blade is too short.

Anywho, I would like to see them on a minifigure, print them off! Post pictures of it!

I like this idea as well... I think it would make a cool minifig... In terms of the hilt... maybe it should be a bit wider? The blade is pretty long, but I think it's ok if the hilt is bigger.

>>EDIT - Oops.. not hilt... I mean handle!

For an actual blade used in fighting, I would agree that the proportions are wrong, but for a design of heraldry, I would say that Azaghal's version works just fine, possibly better than one with a narrower crossguard, since that would create a design too much longer than it is wide.

I must agree, but it still is a great design. That sheild and torso print would look awsome on a minifigure.

It's too simple, just like this post.

I have one piece of advice on the design: it would make a great scottish claymore. It only needs two more sword catchers added. They are V shaped and pointed. Let me find an example that is already hearldic... ok here is a device of a friend who has had an augmentation to her arms. At the top is a black sword impaling a black tower. The sword style is the type I recommend you use for your design. It will give it that special flair, and will distinguish it as a greatsword type weapon.

Recluse, you have a point, but Azaghal wanted to replicate the standard LEGO broadsword.
Azaghal: On the straight black picture, the proportions do look completely off, crossguard too wide, hilt too narrow, etc. However, when you split it and use it as a heraldic emblem, I think it works out pretty well. The triangle shield looks a little funny, (too much blank space) and I'd set the sword about 15 pixels lower on the oval, but beside that it looks pretty good. I especially like the torso emblem repeated on the cape. Reminds me of my original capes (with the triangle shield on them) only it looks a heckuvalot better.

My favorite's the book though. :D Wasn't it your advice that made the template possible? Nice work.

Azure, a saltire cantoned with a star in chief and in base and two crescents addorsed in the flanks, argent.

Hmmm... Maybe. :D

Thanks to everyone for the comments, I'll do a little playing with the main emblem and see if I can get it any better. I thought it looked fine in the first place but, hey, that's why one posts stuff. 8)

Sorry about the double-post, but I just wanted to point out that I've shortened the cross-guards on the stand-alone drawing. Also I lowered the symbol on the oval shield as per Lord Mikal's suggestion. Finally, in celebration of 200 posts, I added a flag with the split-color sword on it:

I understand that Fry_Slayer was originally responsble for the template to this, so thanks. :D

Actually, that one's my template. Fry_Slayer's template is much cleaner and better looking: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1030425
The ovoid shield looks great, I may have to use this as an elite faction loosely associated with the Black Falcons... or maybe the Dragon Masters... we'll have to see. I like your design. :)
