Sigh... I always thought the point with LEGO was that if you wanted a Hogwarts Castle, a Milennium Falcon, a batmobile or a spongebob-thingy or whatever you could build one...

As others have pointed out no one forces me to buy these sets but I still feel a bit disappointed with all these licenses. It feels like LEGO is becoming nothing more than "just another toy".

By the gods! Why Sponge Bob???? I like the Comic book stuff, but Sponge Bob???? :x :x :x

Maybe we have the Batman minifig give the Sponge Bob fig a real beat down. Now, THAT is a vignette!

I have to say, it's really interesting to see the wide array of responses about this whole topic - it seems people are either overjoyed or very annoyed (or depressed or whatever) about the latest developing news, and all for different reasons...

As such, I guess it's really hard to say whether this is a good thing for LEGO or not, since the community is so split...

In either event, there is no denying our beloved plastic product is changing... I do hope it is for the better.

I don't mind licenses that much, but like others, am disapointed that TLC said they would stop, and now this.
I'll admit that I'm excited about Batman, and the avatar looks like it might have some nice pieces, but, Spongebob?!

Chicken Little was right, it is the end of the world.

What I can see, only one of these liscences will last any length of time. Spongebob will have, what, 3 houses and a Krusty Krab shop? Nothing too exiting, and there's no way they will be able to stretch that out as they did Star Wars.

Same with Batman- although they have a wealth of story and material to pick from, again, they can't stretch it out as long.

Avatar is a diffferent matter. If it is a now-running show, they'll have lots of material to work from, and that looks promising fo LEGO castle.

Spongebob?!?

*picks himself up and sits back in his chair, out of which he fell upon reading that, and twitches* Even if the largest reason that I hate it is because it seems that so many people love it. *twitch*

Batman is tolerable – Spider-man was, so even if I'm not thrilled with the decision, I have to let it slide. But Spongebob... *shudder* Still, as E of Alshire said, I sincerely hope that it stops after a year. Or that it's Duplo rather than System. (Avatar I have never heard of, so no comment.)

But why can't TLC just make their own themes the way they used to? Star wars is mostly great; the Harry Potter sets are good, mostly, but they leave a lot of things lacking. Dino Attack was a step in the right direction, if only they hadn't had the few-piece dinosaurs. Knights' Kingdom is slowly improving, the Vikings were awesome, City is its usual self (I'm not very interested in it), but we just don't have the variety of Lego-original themes that there used to be...

*sigh* Personally, I almost never buy a set if I'm not interested in the actual set, so piece assortment is mainly a bonus for me if there's a set I like.
What's the point of having a cake if you're not going to eat it?

I head that the old set designers are dead.

If they are, that explains alot of things, I'm sure there are people here who know if they are or not. :?:

Well, that would explain it, eh? :D I don't know if this is true, but the bottom line (for TLG and ourselves) is that they will try to license sets that will sell. That's it. Period!

Personally, I welcome the Spongebob sets.... I just hope that they are not too juniorized and that they do have some cool, new parts and figs. The TV show is witty and has many gags for adults as well - like a modern-day, albeit more domesticated, 'Bullwinkle'. :)

Do you think that the avatar people, if they're minifigures that is, will have peach skin?

I'm interested to see what TLC will do because they're a cartoon yet they're also a line like Star Wars and all those minifigures get peach skin.

That's my biggest concern as well. I think a lot of the figs will prove castleworthy, and the sets themselves will probably have lot of useful bits as well. (*crosses fingers for luck)
peach heads are useless to me however. :D
(Alex went nutty by the way - he loves that cartoon. Wants to get the Fire Nation ship (if they have one))

I would be upset, too... except TLG never said they would stop! Jake recently addressed this misperception on his blog.
