Valric was in a daze, he didn’t remember anything that happened in the last hour. Theodore and him had been walking through the plains of Legoland since they didnt have horses. Now Valric found himself wandering through a dense forest, alone. The sky above was barely visible and most of the trees were too close together to squeeze through.
The knight spent hours it seemed, wandering the strange forest, trying to find the way out.
The forest was too quiet, like all the animals had fled in terror of something. Even when Valric didn’t find himself wandering in circles, he found the forest seemed strangely familiar.
The big knight wasn’t known well for his patience. Cursing at last, he drew his sword and began cutting his way through the trees too dense to move through. Escape must be on the other side.
After about the fourth swing, Valric found himself too tired to continue. Sighing, he collapsed on a mossy boulder in a sweaty heap. He couldn’t tell why, but something was laughing at him. His anger growing, he stood up and ordered his stalker to show himself.
Out of nowhere, a blast of wind sent him sprawling into a tree. Cursing even louder, he searched in vain for his unseen assailant. Another blast of wind hit him, crying out, Valric was slammed into a tree. He didn’t see where it’s sharp, thorn like branches hit him but it drew blood. Laughter echoed through the forest, laughter at him. The last thing Valric saw was a knight in ebony armour walking towards him…
Valric snapped awake.
“Another bloody nightmare.” He grumbled.
He looked up to see the sun slowly rising over the distant grasslands. Sighing, he got up and got ready to leave. Theodore and him were staying at probley their last stop before they passed by Orion. Five minutes later, Theodore was up and they were out the door.
“We’ll be coming to Orion by noon, if we continue to walk.” Said Theodore.
Valric grunted as the wound in his side was virtually on fire. Bloody magic users. Valric vowed never to have anything to do with their lot ever again. Valric enjoyed scraps on a daily basis and had the scars to show. But if there was one thing about war in general he hated, it was the fact that the enemy had a habit of being a wizard, or some other magical creature. If he had a normal wound, it would have been healed by now.
The two knights wandered down the imperial highway. Half way there, they were forced to engage in a boring conversation with a travelling merchant. The man seemed to have a Batlandish accent and pale skin, but he said he had grown up on the Legoland side of the border. The conversation was most done by the fat merchant, Theodore was trying to be polite and sound interested, but Valric was looking in the other direction the whole time.
Soon the fat merchant began to ramble on about half interesting things. The two learned from him most of the details of what had happened with the Cavaliers and the Fright Knights down near Castle Dracul. Something about giant vampire bats and other hideous monsters ambushing them, but in the end they were saved by several former cadets. The only name the two could make out was a cavalier named Jogo Flakonensis. It seemed that they were still in the dark about what precisely had occurred with Count Belzzar though.
“I wonder if I should go make a report on this. After all, I was an official knight of Orion, last I checked.” Chuckled Valric.
Theodore nodded “I suppose you should. If a knight under my command withheld potentially important information about possible “enemies” I’d make sure, he dug latrines for the rest of his career. These were the kind of things that they do enter in the archives don’t they?”
Valric nodded “Yeah. The one and only time I found myself in the archives, I think I found about a hundred scrolls worth of meaningless deeds done by no named knights. Still, there was something about Pythos that got to me…”
Theodore looked at him “Oh?”
Valric shrugged and remembered about the string of nightmares he’d been having “I don’t know. You can never tell with these ruddy wizards. Oh by the way, anybody know the date?” He asked quickly, wanting to change the subject to anything else.
“I think it was sometime in mid-November.” Said the merchant, who was still rambling on.
Valric looked at Theodore “It took us half a month to walk across Legoland???”
Theodore shrugged “Well I suppose that’s what we get for walking…”
