SNOT technique?

Post by mysticallyenchanting »

Hi,
I'm trying to build a window where the glass is perpendicular to the rest of the wall (like this: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=251584 ).
Any tips? I think it's called the snot technique but that's all I can find out.
Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul,

Welcome to CC, btw. Yes, SNOT stands for Studs Not On Top, and basically refers to any building in which the pieces point any way but up. Holger has a little tutorial on some of the different ways you can put bricks together. The stained glass window you linked to is by Jojo, who is a member of this forum, so I'm sure he can answer more clearly, but it looks to me that he simply built a 1xnxn sheet out of the trans elements and some gray plates and then slid it into a slot that was the right size. I did something similar in this creation and also in the white and black wall of the house on the left in this picture. In my examples the walls turned 90 degrees is not actually attached at all, but is just held in place by the other walls around them.

Hey Lenny,

Do you think that's how he did it in this case, though? If you look up near the arches it is clear that there is a layer one stud closer to us, and the window falls behind that. I think he just has slots down both sides for the "window" piece to slide into.

It looks Jojo's whole window is built sideways. You can see some studs on the inside of the window.
