Alternate Set Review: 6040 Blacksmith Shop
Join the Classic Castle alternate model discussion. Please post your opinions of the models' play ability, creativity, design, etc. Which models stand up to our catapult of critique and which ones crumble in shame!
This week’s set is 6040 Blacksmith Shop.
Blacksmith Shop was released in 1984 for the lion knights. The set has four
alternate models on the box including a castle wall with a tower, a medieval restaurant and crenelated cart, a castle wall with a doorway and a peasant's cart, and a castle tower with brick buttresses on the corners. Instructions for this last model are included with the set.

That's great! So many differing uses for so few parts! I love how it implies different things without being too specific (i.e, round 1x1 as opposed to goblets).
This is a great review idea, by the way.

Some decent models for the number of pieces. I always did kinda like the alternate that came in the instructions and the restaurant is neat. I never did get why in the one with the peasent cart the peasant was wearing the blue pants which belonged on the soldier, they look really wierd on him, black was deffinately a good original chioce.
While not great as sets themselves they work fairly well as secondary-types. The peasant adds so much to all of them!
Good idea for the reviews, by the way.

Hi,
this is a great idea to discuss the alternate models as well!
From this set I like the alternate version: medieval restaurant most.

It's pretty good, considering it was probably only $10 (or somewhere near it.). An easy way to get good wall pieces!

Methinks they did it to make some "alternate figs" as well as sets. I know one of the alternates for the 6018 Battle Dragon shows the figs with swapped pants, also. Variety is the spice of life, after all.wunztwice wrote:I never did get why in the one with the peasent cart the peasant was wearing the blue pants which belonged on the soldier,
Anyway, 6040 looks like you can make some decent stuff with its pieces - large numbers of basic bricks are what do the trick.

I'm sorry, that's not exactly what I meant. I actually meant to say that I don't know whay they did it because I personally think it looks hideous. I am always up for switching stuff up, but not when it looks bad. Sorry for any confusion.Azaghal wrote:Methinks they did it to make some "alternate figs" as well as sets.

A Blacksmith Shop is an important addition to any medieval castle. Lots of usefull parts, a horse and 2 minifigs => a Megablox good set!

This set is the only Castle set in all it's forms that was ever had a 2nd model instructions that didn't fall from the original set which made this set "must have 2".
The small tower and the peasent cart were good designs and well thought of. This Peasent minifig is pretty unique in it's on glory way. The small tower on one hand had to ability to be connected to other castle sets, which is great however the fact that the baseplate was formed this way to fit the original model it kind of spoils it.
The crenelated cart is very intresting and unique I like that cart, TLC never adopted the idea for real sets. For a small set with less then 100 bricks, I think those alternate models proves what LEGO is all about. That you can use the same bricks to make more then the original model. An idea that has been forgatten for the last 10 years or so. I think it's only natural to begin the ASR with this set. 10/10

This is a great idea for set reviews, can't wait to see more! This is especially helpful on sets I don't have, since I never got to see the box.

I guess I am pathetic also, since I don't have it. In fact, I would guess that most members here don't have it. Just remember, lack of old sets isn't what matters, its what you do with what you have that counts...Jameson wrote:Sadely I don't have this set(how pathetic am I) ?

Oh men.... I wish they produce sets like this one...Everything is perfect... the figs, the shop, the theme....everything
I mean, everyone needs a blacksmith shop in his medieval town(from where are those armors coming...),and the civilian minfig also...and the parts,of course(i love that pitchfork...)
I wish this one is going to be a next legend,if there will be any...
clearly 10/10
sorry for my bad english
greetings from serbia
