Should LEGO minifigs be "Fleshy" only?

Yes, fleshies are the way of things to come! Old-school fans need to evolve.

No, a mixture of fleshy and yellow figs is best; appealing to fans of all ages.

I'm old-school. LEGO needs fleshies like it needs Jack Stone! Yellow minifigs only.

Fleshy Conversion?

Post by Blueandwhite »

With the recent introduction of the "fleshy" minifig in licenced lines, do you think that its time to phase out the traditional minifig alltogether in favour of the newer fleshy? Perhaps an accessory pack could be developed featuring older head-prints and hands in the newer colour.

I suppose my biggest concern is that by having two different colours, kids may be turned off by the incompatability of their minifigs. While many AFOLs like myself have a large quantity of yellow minifigs, newer fans do not. For them, collecting only fleshies is likely more beneficial than a mixture of both flesh-toned and yellow figs. I think that most people will agree; traditional yellow minifigs just don't go well together with the newer fleshy figures.

So what do you think? Is it time for LEGO to drop the banana-men and move exclusively to fleshy figs, or should LEGO continue down the current path? Perhaps LEGO should simply return to the classic yellow minifig, disposing of the un-LEGO-like fleshies. What do you think?

I voted for #2. I don't mind fleshies, and in fact I like them, but I would be quite upset if TLC abandoned yellow figs completely. A yellow smile face is almost as iconic as LEGO's 2x4 red brick. I thinks fleshies and yellows can work side-by-side fine.

I think fleshies and yellows can co-exist without problems. With fleshies sticking to licenced themes, and yellows to original themes, I think both types can share the spotlight evenly.

I also voted for number two. I've grown to really like the fleshies, but I would also be upset if LEGO discontinued yellow figs.

I voted for only yellow. I find that the two kinds just don't look good next to each other. I do use a couple fleshies as other ethnicities (or corpses in teh case of the "sleeping" heads.

However, I just don't see why LEGO started in on the fleshies. Sure one can argue that they look more like the Movie characters, but these are legos. I can't use any of the new characters because they don't look like the other figs. There are some cool faces I would love in yellow, but I dont buy the sets because they are in flesh.

ALSO the torsos with flesh colors on them can't be used with yellow figs because the flesh clashes with the yellow and just doesn't look good (in fact this is my MAIN reason).

It really makes me mad that some of these newer parts are alot less versatile than older pieces. In the good days any lego part could be used for anything. Now, it seems, it is a lot less so. (I realize this is a bit of an exaduration, but that's how it feels.)

Thanks for 'listening'.

I voted for #2. That said, I really dont like the fleshies, but I think that they appeal more to the younger age groups(jeez heard that one before), and the classic yellow appeal more to those of us who know what REAL Lego was once like. I am strictly classic yellow in all my displays. It just doesnt seem lego if it doesnt have a yellow head  .

I'm still having a hard time with this one.

As much as I'd like to vote in my own poll, I'm simply unsure as to how I feel about this issue.

On the one hand, I'm quite fond of the classic yellow minifig, and the longtime fan in me would never want to give these guys up.

On the other hand, I don't think that its good to have the two types of minifigs side-by-side on store shelves, as the inconsistency must put off some children. Surely this doesn't help LEGO sell sets. Unfortunately, I think that if LEGO were to abandon one type of minifig, the classic yellow guy would be the first to go.

Making a decision on this one is quite hard for me.

I voted two because it just seems the best option.

I was´nt a big fan of the flesh toned figs when they first arrived but despite my initial feelings I voted #2.
I think that the fleshies could have a future in Lego as long as they stay in the license lines, they fit good with the darker themes of the latest HP movies and the gothic-feel of Batman.

Boo to fleshies! They are not bad for sick people, but I think that overall they stink.

P.S. You can probably guess what I voted for.

I don't think I'll ever get over the old Yellow figs, and I will continue to buy ones I like over bricklink.

I do support fleshies though, and my (small) collection of them is growing. I hope to use them mainly for different races, like elves or something.

I think I'm an all or none kind of guy.

If LEGO wants fleshies, I would prefer that they make everything fleshy. If they want yellow minifigs, then they should all be yellow. Its hard to make a decent Batman scene when normal fleshies are something of a rarity. At the same time, it stinks when a great new head comes out, but it doesn't fit in with the classic guys.

Personally, I preferred the yellow as it removed any question as to the race of the minifigure. For me, both 1 and 3 are far more appealing than 2. This is one topic where I just can't see myself compromising. Still, as a traditionalist, I'll probably have to go with number 3.

Voted #3

I would be some choked of LEGO got rid of yellow, as almost all my figs are yelow. My only exception is Owen Lars from the Sandcrawler set.

As this was brought about the same time as the "other colours being changed fiasco" I wonder how LEGO veiws this decision in hindsight.

If Lego would exchange all my yellow heads and hands if they ever stopped making yelow figs I could live with it, otherwise yelows forever.... And the fewer licensed themes the better :!:

That pretty much sums up everything I have to say about fleshies.

But I think I'll go with the Old School vote.

The short answer: Lando.

The long answer: It undoubtedly dawned on The Powers That Be at LEGO at some point that in the United States at least, that a pale color wasn't going to particularly be well looked upon by blacks for a black actor (no, don't anyone tell me that they aren't bright yellow - you would be missing the point about relative light and dark, and inviting thread lock). Faced with a problem, LEGO resolutely dodged the question as long as they possibly could, carefully avoiding making a Lando despite the clamors for him. When Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson) made his appearance in the second trilogy, the fact that they were dodging became something that was harder to disguise. Basically, they were faced with continuing to not produce figs based on actors of african ethnicity (and the repurcussions that would entail), or facing the question. Putting out a brown skinned fig pretty much trapped them into producing a generic euro-skinned counterpart. So, they basically have a two-tone policy: classic yellow for anything not based on actual people, and at least some kind of stab at making more realistic flesh tones for the licensed stuff (HP, NBA, Star Wars, etc.).

As to my own preferences, I have legions of the classic yellow, and it doesn't bother me particularly, but I don't have a problem with the natural tones beyond I don't like mixing the two.
