Weekly Set Review: Black Knight's Castle
One of my favorite sets, at least looks-wise. This is one of the best looking castle's out there. Construction-wise, it is pretty good. I don't really like the raised base-plate. And the secret exit out the back doesn't really do it for me. And it would be real easy to breach by attacking the low house part too... Also, the lack of a dungeon is kind of weird, especially how it was billed as the "Dungeon Master's Castle"
Great selection of figures too and the only set to come with white dragon plumes and that large flag.
But all in all, I'd give it at least an 8.5/10.

Hello!
That's one of many sets that kept me from falling into my dark ages back then. In 1992 I was already 15, thus I wasn't supposed to get sets that are meant for 12-year-olds... However, after I watched Kevin Costner's "Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves" I felt the urge to get a Nottingham Castle. So I went and bought this set 6086.
And I like it to the day. It has a very castle-ish look to it, being not only a fortress with walls and towers but actually also with a bower, a well and some red roofs. I also like the built door with the ghost behind. Naturally the selection of figs is quite good, though instead of the ghost a female fig would have been better in my (as always) much more then humble opinion.
Since this set is a Dragon Knights ("Black Knights") set, I tend to count it as a "Legoland" set, even though it is already labelled "System".

Hm, first of the name "Dungeon Master's" is just a name that was used in one country. Secondly I'd have thought the dungeon is the bar-covered hole in the middle of the courtyard...Athos wrote:Also, the lack of a dungeon is kind of weird, especially how it was billed as the "Dungeon Master's Castle"

The last truly great castle. Like its predecessors, 6086 is a fantastic castle, with a number of fantastic details, great play value and a wonderful assortment of minifigs. Later castles, like 6090 were simply too big. There just weren't enough bricks to construct a solid looking structure. Unfortunately, this is a trend that has not been reversed.
The funny thing is, the transition between this set and the subsequent Dragon Masters sets is what probably sent me into my dark ages.
9.5/10

I wish my brothers got this set when it was out! (I was too young to be buying anything yet). Awesome set. Just looking at the one picture makes me quiver with delight. Much better then both of the BFFs I bought, but they were cheaper
I like the way it looks; It doesn't look like a big huge wall, nor a castle that is only big pieces. It has a nice mix.
(What are those big pieces called? Like this http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?P=6083 )

My favorite set ever!
I own it and I love it! I got this set for my 13th birthday and for a couple of weeks it took my mother quite a lot of nerves to make me study for my exams. As most other people pointed out it has a nice selection of figs and parts. The last and the best of the old line castles.

The greatest castle ever made! I love ever detail, from its looks to the inclusion of a roofed timber section to the excellent figs. The Black Knights have always been my faviourite theme so naturally I feel they deserve the best castle...
Interestingly, like Blueandwhite I also was far more disappointed with the dragon knights because of the stark contrast...
God Bless,
Nathan

Indeed!TheBohrok wrote:With twelve minifigures, the play value is very great. Four mounted knights? That is just awesome.
The white/blue knight is my favorite LEGO-made knight, and the others aren't too shabby either.
As a set, this is great. Otherwise, well, the peices just aren't that great. Granted, the absence of any BURPs is appreciated, but it's just filled in with more prefab wall parts. Since I rarely keep sets built nowadays, and instead use them in my own MOCs, this set isn't any more useful than Royal Knight's Castle or a similar set.
However, as a set, this towers above the rest.

dude, spellcheck, spellcheck!stawastawa wrote:mmm my pride...
i got this set on ebay a little while back.. teh person i bought it from must have built it only once and taken it down shortly after. all my plumes are still on the wheels and the pieces have (well had) 0 dust. mad eme happy. although i kindof wnat to aply the dragon plumes but the collector in mee says not to... we shall see how things turn out.
i personally dont really liek the ghost in the tower. fomr the pics i think that the ghost in that little front shack on 6090 is better but thats just me... i love the battle ments (although i stilll say "how do tehy get up there! theey arnt nijas for heavans sake!") the back door is really nice. especialy as it can be closed up.
anothe rthing i dont liek about the towers is teh fact that the center of them (a 4x4 stud space) is 1 brick lower than the rest of the tower top. so if you put it down there teh defender cant really see ove rteh battlements. and if you put him on top he is hard to position but is at a great hight to see ove rteh battlements and shoot arrows. i guess this is easilly solved but i am a purist and dont liek modifying sets.
the gate tower is awsome although the one arch under teh drawbrige confuses me.
i liek the random wepons positioned all around the set and how each wall is defendable. (has battlements that figs can use)
i think having the well in teh middle of teh courtyard also adds great realism to the set. the duingeuns could have been done better but i guess they work. i wish that the set came with gold coins instead of yellow 1x1 round plates. but i gues sit wanst quite old enough...
i cnat wait to get 6090 so i can compare it to the only castle that really comes close.
6080 mountain fortress is too small and monarchs catsle, 6074, and 6073 are built in a diffrent style ( i love monarchs castle though)
anyways my top castle set!
looks like a very great set, with lots and lots of knights, and the mixture of new and old knight helmets! Very great castle, love the grey with the black, but it seems to be very expensive right now...

Well I unforunately didnt get this set as a young child. I did however manage to get about 3/4 of the origional parts from a friend of mine who new about my lego addiction. I think this set is awesome although Ive never been ever to build a fully assembled one. It had awesome parts, 12 minifigs, horses , The list goes on and on. I only have about 3/4 of this set and I will still give it a 10/10. best castle set ever!

One great set. I like the ovrall design and the great amount of figures ( for the present time).
Edit: Sorry, it's BURPs ( Big Ugly Rock Piece)
You mean LURPs ( Large Ugly Rock Piece)Lord Felix wrote:(What are those big pieces called? Like this http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?P=6083 )

You know you're a good person when you see megablocks and have to do things you would rather not.

Re: Weekly Set Review: Black Knight's Castle
On my wedding day, my groomsmen gave me this set as a gift, so it has a soft spot in my heart. I quite like the large CRAPP, so I may be in the minority on that.

This is a nice castle to me, and this was the "one" I always wanted, but when I had the change, I disided not to buy it becouse of the lack of 2 walls. The photo`s of it are always made in the right angle and show the good sides of it. But it is a good castle, and I can say that I feel a little sorry for not buying it

Hehe, I think Ben accidentally didn't change the announcement back to the regular set review standard annozuncement, that's why it says something about alternate models. :-)bannear wrote:I looked for some alternate models in the on-line instructions (as I don't actually have the original myself) but didn't see any. Were there some for this set? on the box or?
