Mid Week Set Review: Magic Wizard Key Chain

Post by architect »

Join the weekly Classic Castle set review discussion. Please post your opinions on the set play ability, piece selection, design, etc. Which sets stand up to our catapult of critique and which ones crumble in shame!

Today's set is 3978 Magic Wizard Keychain .

Magic Wizard Keychain was released in 2002. It features Majisto/Merlin from the Dragon Master's line and a metal chain.

I got one of these, and the leg promptly broke off. Apparently S@H was out of stock for a replacement, so I cut off the chain.

I like it. LEGO key chains are great; but the three I've got with me right now are space... Hmmm...

The LEGO key-chains are a very nice idea but with poor realisation. They would be far more useful if they were not so easily broken.

I am predicting a lot of this going on here...

Although, to be honest, if I were to go getting keychains... this would be the one to go with, since only the hat is truly wrecked in any way by pulling out/destroying the chain- and the hat is the one part that I think we all feel we have enough of.

In light of the fact that calling this a "set" is a bit silly, I shall forgo my usual rating of various aspects of the "set".

I never had any key chains. I belive the Wizard's Cart set is a better army builder for Majisto, because they do not have a chain attached.

BTW, I'll post my usuall minifig reveiw this weekend seeing the board's down time prevented me from doing it before and I didn't want to do a mid-weekly one.

I have a large collection of minifig keychains although I've never used them for holding keys. I have two uses for them:

1)I buy multiples of hard to get figs (snowtrooper or the pink princess with fabric dress) and remove the keychain and pin so the figs can be used in MOCs. Or,

2)In the case of more common figs, I remove the keychain but leave the pin in the figs head. Put an ornament hook through the pin and you have a minifig Christmas decoration. Majisto might not make a good keychain, but it's fun to see him hanging from the tree.

I've had a number of LEGO keychains over the years, and honestly, they don't stand up to rubbing around in your pocket with keys and loose change. The printing wears off and legs/arms/hands get ripped off or broken.

That being said, I now simply lever the the pin out of the head on keychains and turn them into regular figs as best the design allows.

Majisto himself is reasonably cool. I had two or three as keychains, but they always wore out in about 6 months time.
