Battle at the Pass Photo Review!

Post by Dr Lucky »

So, my next box came from Lego today.

Look what I got:

It seems to have a lot of figures. Ten plus the skeleton:

We've got a bunch of seige weapons here for the Rogue Knights:

Here's the Hero Knights' Wall:

And a preview of what I might get to build tomorrow:

So, the review.
First off, I didn't apply the stickers. I usually don't put them on anything but Viking shields.
Honestly, this set isn't that exciting. The wall kind of sucks. The side towers can reattach at different angles, and it has hinges, but there is no way to close it up to be a whole fortress. The seige weapons aren't that great either. The ladder tower is cool, and the weapon cart isn't bad. The ram and the catapult kind of suck though.
Of course, that stuff isn't why we bought this set, is it? The figs, of course, are great. 10 guys in armor in a $40 set is wonderful. I wish we had gotten some better heads for the minifigs. On the box, there was a picture of a fig with a cool mustache head, but that isn't the head actually in the box... We get 2 x Vladek head, 3 x Rogue Knight (Oriental Adventures Bad Guy) Head, 2 x Young Jayko Head, 1 x Rascus Head, 1 x King Mathias Head, and 1 x Viking with Dark Grey Beard Head (I think that was also originally from an Oriental Adventures Bad Guy). Other than the heads, the figs are cool. The gold armor and pearl helmets are great. Dracus is also a superb figure.

Overall, I give this a C as a set, but definately worth the money for the figs.
Hopefully, tomorrow I'll get to do Arkham...

Nice review. Looks like I might snag this one for the figures, except I don't especially like the underwear knights very much...

Thanks for the review. It's clear that the set is worth because of the figs and accessories. The wall definately sucks and is nasty bunch of useless BUPs. However the price is fair enough (or at least the US price).

That knight in the green armor with green shield looks great!
$40 isn't too bad.
I'll pick this set up later this year.

a set pretty easy to reach consensus on...burps and boring wall make the design so so, but the figures and affordable price make it a worthwhile pick up at any rate. i originally wanted this pretty bad, but my girlfriend decided she wanted it, too, and for a while it looked like we might have to get too until i decided she could build it, display it any way she wanted, and basically do whatever as long as i could occasionally use the soldiers to bolster my rouge knight army and create an army for kentis, who, as an above poster said, is a really cool knight.

i am absolutely thrilled that we're finally getting the best of both worlds; cool individual knights with some great colors and heraldry (if not quite accurate), and troops for them, so we don't just end up with 4 of the same guy and no troops.

the set gets in the area of a b- to a b, but i'd give the direction this seems to indicate lego is going in an a, easily.

I picked up the set last night. This is probably the best mid price range set for minifigures since 6060 Knight's Challenge. The 5 yellow and 5 green knights are very nice. I also like the weapons cart. This set has a ridiculous amount of weapons, probably the most of any castle set. It has 9 spears, 4 halberds, 5 oriental halberd/pikes, 4 crossbows, 3 axes, one mace, two giant falling clubs, two shields (more shields would have been nice), and 7 zwords (power ranger swords). Plus all ten men have european armor.

A couple of traditional smile heads for the generic knights would have been nice. Otherwise we wonder why there are two vladeks, etc in the same group of men. It is also very hard to tell which figures get which heads. LEGO, if you want to save money by not putting the heads on the torsos, please make sure we can tell in the instructions which heads go to the appropriate figures. The black pieces are still impossible to read and need the old white outlines that used to be around black pieces. Thanks!

The siege ram, tower, and catapult are decent and match the yellow color scheme. I am not fond of the wall's giant wall pieces but I do like that it is hinged and modular. We can add it to Mistland's Tower to make a larger set. The tall castle doors in brown are also nice. Kids will love this set as there is tons of play in it. My store got these on Sunday and 4 days later about half are sold.

That looks like one of the best sets released since the early 90's. Putting it on the top of my shopping list.

I won't review it until it's in my hands, but I can still tell it's going to be awsome. The castle is questionable, but if it doesn't run up the price, then who cares. The knights are the best but they could have used torso printings.

After these pics I think I'm gonna get it...one day
and just for the figs...

This set could be really great, but I'm much bothered with the things like those are(I will use architect's terms):two giant falling clubs, oriental halberds and that ugly green-paintings on the wall...it looks like someone started graffitti and ran away...

It doesn't have the old classic charm, but it's one of the best we have...

Things I like: Generic knights, new euro-armour, ubundance of weapons, helmets, cauldron (I don't have one yet), wagon wheels (I don't have enough yet :) ) and the large doors which look different to the old ones.

Things I don't like: Prefab wall peices.

I'd say the scales are tipping toward me getting this set

To me, the most exciting feature is that the Castle wall corner are not printed, which makes these pieces finally available in new gray. So now pretty much you can build the same sets in old and new gray.

Thanks for the pictures of all the various components. I keep holding the box in my hands in the store, mulling over purchasing it, the figures are why I would (grilled helms, YAY!!!), but underwear knights and that awful gold color do not appeal to me....

Instead, I get much more value purchasing individual pieces from the wall at LEGO stores.

They are not, in fact, underwear knights. They are just wearing yellow clothes. Also, on topic, I wil be getting at least two of these, if only for the figs. :D

just got the set and it's very charming. the prefab walls aren't really bothering me. i like that you can rearrange the end wall pieces, too. it comes with TONS of weapons and guys, which is great. it would be well worth it to buy two.

anyone else who has this and the rogue knight battleship (8821) notice that the dracus (the leader of the yellow guys) is different? in the rogue knight battleship, he looks like this:
http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?M=cas297
while in the battle at the pass he has the same body, but a different head, which is the same as vladek. it's weird.
