I think Flickr's perceived "slowness" is not a bandwidth issue, but has more to do with the rendering speed of your browser.

I was chatting with someone last night about this, and we tried loading Flickr pages using several different browsers. I use Safari on my Mac, and have never thought of Flickr as especially slow. I also use Internet Explorer 7 at work, and Flickr loads just fine. The other person used Internet Explorer 6 and complained about Flickr being slow, but he tried Firefox instead, and it loaded much faster. If you're still using IE6, maybe it's time to upgrade to something better.

Back on topic, I've shared my preference for Flickr over Brickshelf several times -- most recently in a rather lengthy post in this thread, so I won't repeat myself here.

Hello!

Hehe, I guess my loyalty to BrickShelf is moot now.

However, I have combed through Flickr, and I find it unconfortable to look at. You need about three clicks to get the pictures displayed the size you want it to. For each picture in a gallery. Flickr is lacking a function ”save these settings" (or something like that).
And some users have decided to make their pics not displayable in different sizes. It's their right to decide that. It's anoying, though.

Advantages of Flickr:

Don't have to wait until it gets moderated
Allows comments for pictures

Disadvantages:

Slow (For me)
If not Pro, limited amount of photos and sets.
Pro costs money
Needs a Google Account (Weh, more account sign-ups :x )

That's why I used Brickshelf. It's free, easy to organize, and only-LEGO!

MOCpages is overrun by stupid kiddies. I regularly recieve silly comments there, because the kids are too dumb to understand what the MOCs are about.
In case you didn't notice, MOCpage photos are hosted on BrickShelf.
Also, what Jojo Said.

Perfectly said! I find Flickr so annoying that unless there is a thumbnail in the post that I find interesting, I will not look at a MOC or anything linked there. And when I do, I usually can only stand to look at 1 or 2 photos. Then I have to exit out of there. And regardless of settings or whatever, the internet connection I've got should not cause me to think that I'm accessing Flickr from 1996.

RIP Brickshelf-there goes a bunch of my creations that I forgot to back up...

I'm going to try and get a gallery feature implemented on my forum for members to use. And myself :P

I'm not a flicker fan at all. I guess we can still use maj, assuming it doesn't suffer a similar fate...

My only difficulties with brickshelf's functionality might be the fact it cant select multiple files to be deleted.

Despite of what some people feel about him in the recent event I have only gratitude to Kevin whoever he is, for he provided a great service which I deeply believe bring back a lot of overwise still in dark aged AFOLs.

Yes, I agree completely. This whole thing has brought way to much controvery to CC.

I hate to keep disagreeing with you in multiple threads, Steve, because I truly respect and value your opinion. That said...

I would strongly caution people against thinking that a switch to Maj.com is the solution to Brickshelf going away. Maj has every single one of the issues that Brickshelf had, plus the fact that it's not LEGO-specific. If everyone (or even a large minority) from Brickshelf switches to Maj and we all start linking there instead, who's to say that the same thing won't happen to Maj?

I'm already seeing mass migrations to both Maj and Flickr, along with discussions elsewhere about creating "the new Brickshelf." Unfortunately, there are several initiatives already under way to create new LEGO-only image-hosting solutions. All of this seems to me to be jumping the gun. Given that we don't know yet what's going on with Brickshelf, I think we can survive a few days without uploading new MOCs.

I'm seriously concerned about the community fragmenting further than it already is, and premature mass-migrations can only hurt the worldwide LEGO community.

Bottom line: Let's try to hold off migrating to Maj, Flickr, MOCpages, or anything new until we know what's truly going on.

I fully agree and plan on just remaining in a holding pattern until we get some definite information or until it becomes obvious that brickshelf isn't coming back. Since I've already got a maj account, however, any new uploads will go there...

What is the appeal of Flickr over other hosting sites like Photobucket and Imageshack? Since joining the forum I have noticed that forumites prefer(ed) either BrickShelf or Flickr. It seems like there are mainly two options being discussed and I am curious as to why.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Well, that's new. At least we know now that it will really be shutting down for good.

I switched completely to flickr a few months ago... I never really liked brickshelf for hosting my images. I'd view other peoples there though. I love flickr! I get get a free Pro account the whole time I use it because I use Sbcglobal/Yahoo/Att broadband internet. It has always loaded quickly, quicker than brickshelf in most cases... :)

I'm a little sad it's shutting down though.
