Well, Chicago is better than DC (18 hour drive instead of 26), and a lot better than Portland (36 hours). I would have been there this year except my finances did not allow it.

You could always take the Train. Amtrak is going bankrupt, so if funding is a problem, their prices would be low, and your stuff does not get destroyed.

around Virginia (middle of East coast), one in Missouri or Kansas
(dead center of U.S.), and one in central California (middle of
West coast). That way everyone can make it to one, even if
they drive! Oh, and one or two somewhere in Canada.

Don't forget, its hard to fund these and find a decent spot, so Virginia would not be a good spot, as there are no major cities with large domes and such. I agree with your idea about an east coast fest, mid, and west coast fest, but make sure they are in major places, like NYC, or a big major city in CAL. Or find a place where a lot of people may go to.

I'd love to see something up here in Northern California; the mid-northern Bay Area (mainly San Francisco/Oakland) is close enough for me; I could also see going to the south bay (think San Jose); or even Sacramento or Stockton at a stretch. But realistically, what we've got now works well enough. It would be nice to have a more centralized event for most of the country though.... Perhaps Brickfest could find a new home in the middle states?

If they don't want to hold it in DC, thats fine. So how about holding it in NY or NYC even?

There's larger concentrations of not just people, but AFOLs in the tri-state area.

BrickFest 2007 was held in Portland, Oregon from March 30 through April 1st. A great time was had by all. The Sunday Expo set a single day attendance record for a North American AFOL event.

Honestly JP, did you really not know? I will trust in positive intentions and assume that you did not. That you somehow missed the banner on Lugnet for three months straight, and all the buzz on other sites like this one. But I have long ago tired of the "a BrickFest outside of DC is not a real BrickFest" rubbish.

Whether or not another BrickFest is held rests entirely on the shoulders of Christina Hitchcock. She has done so much already for the hobby in the last seven years that if she never does another thing, she has already earned a place in the AFOL Hall of Fame. Thank you Christina for all you have done for the hobby.

The issue of conventions is far too big to broach here. It is a hydra of Byzantine complexity. A complex web of money, locations, egos, true believers, whiners and unrealistic expectations. But at it's simplest level the cons are about us getting together and enjoying our pastime. I hope the East Coast gets an annual con, just as we have NWBC here in the Northwest, Pacific that is.

I would love to get to a DC con, though it would be difficult and expensive for me. Or better yet; Miami or Vegas! Now we're cooking with gas! Vegas has 2 and half billion hotel rooms, and 413,000 convention locations. Airfare and hotels are cheap from anywhere in the contiguous states. Just a dream. Hey, we could all storm Goldman's house and get him to autograph a flannel shirt for each of us, while the others try to make off with part of his 13 metric tonnes of old light gray...

Actually, two of the nine BrickFest conventions were held in Portland, Oregon. Sorry for the double post, I haven't figured out how to do two or more quotes in one post.

Vegas would be a great place for a convention. There are so many large hotels with HUGE rooms. But..... those hotels aren't exactly cheep are they?

I think it would be nice if it was held somewhere more central, Kansas would be nice and central but it'd be more likely to be in Texas. Meh, I can dream.

I dont' know about anyone else, but I like multiple cons a year.

I can't always make the meetings for my LUG (due to work scheduling), but I can make it to the local con's. Also, multiple cons gives multiple reasons for AFOLs to get together.

While I see the SEALUG members on a semi-regular basis, there are a lot of people I only see at NWBC, especially those members from Oregon, BC, and California.

I do agree, though, a con in Vegas would be awfully fun. Expensive, but fun.

Not being in an area where a massive LUG is possible (in other words, including any more than a couple builders other than my brothers) and having attended the most recent Brickfest in PDX I would love to have another there. NWBC is fine, and normally I could probably swing going any other fall than this one.

Multiple cons a year is fine, but two, maybe three seems like a nice cap. Any more just gets crazy and decreases the effect of the others.

BF PDX would be awesome again! I would be able to go if it's near the same as last year.
