And yeah, I've got tons and tons of Indy figs, thats what finally tipped me over the edge in deciding to open a brinklink store.

Well, what got me thinking on the matter was that people were having to use such large sets as "Dwarves Mine" as an army builder, and others had commented on the high price/fig ratio of some other sets as well.
Well, dwarves mine isn't terrible as a builder, since it's got so much great stuff other than the figs, but you'd still probably only buy a few. I've probably bought at least a dozen of some of the smaller castle sets. As for the worst large set with few figs to use as an army builder.... I'd vote the UCS Falcon. Five hundred dollars, and five(?) figs that you really only need one of each

In terms of price per fig ratio, I'd estimate that KKI in general was poor for amassing an army.

Maybe so, but I liked the figures considerably. Even though I shouldn't have spent money on them I did out of how much I liked them. Luckily there was the defense archer set and the axe cart which weren't too bad on price.

I thought the Royal Knights had a worse price per figure ratio, but luckily for some good Bricklink stores and one good trader from this site I was able to make up for not buying these in bulk when they were in TRU and Target.

I agree that the bulls were cheaper to amass, I collected equal amounts and these two sets were my army buiders of choice for the lion knights of KK1:

6026 - http://www.classic-castle.com/sets/archives/6026.html
4801/4811 - http://www.classic-castle.com/sets/archives/1287.html

From my experience the 2000 kk1 range was an increase in price in Australia from the previous frights knights/ninjas and were less stocked on shelfs and accordingly fewer sets were later heavily reduced. I was able to pick up 3 of the large Kings Leo Castle castle 6098 reduced at around $40 us/au dollars, the first one I had purchase was for $116 au/us and that had been reduced down from $126 au/us.

Lego castle/vikings has stayed pretty consistent in price here since 2000, the pre 2000 period with the impulse sets reduced to around $1.80 seems now like a dreamtime.

At present I would have to say it is the current dwarf sets and those precious Dark forrest figures that are hard to acumulate in numbers without hurting my wallet.

edit - the other thing I should add is that the retail price of Lego has definitely remained higher in Aust then it is in US so that it is often cheaper to to purchase lego from bricklink/ebay and from other parts of the world then just relying on Aust retail and online SAH.

I guess this would be any of the large number of sets without minifigs as no matter how many you buy you never get one minifig....

My favorite army builders are
http://brickset.com/detail.aspx?Set=7091-1
and
http://brickset.com/detail.aspx?Set=7090-1
Both of these sets include a good amount of figures and weapons for a decent price.

I don't even see the reason in getting an army that big.

I would actually say the worst army building set is the kings castle siege 7094. It's $100 and you only get 9 figs.

Also I do not think the Battle Packs are good for army building. You can get almost 4 of the mini sets like The Knight 5615 for the price of one of the Battle Packs. You're only loosing one extra fig, but gaining enough extra accessories that you don't need the variety of the Battle Packs. Hope this makes sense.

But for the cost of it you get four men with lots of weapons but only 4 men while the battle pack has 5. Still seems pretty good.

I am not greatly interested in making massive armies but I do try to get a nice respectable number of them. Right now it is the 2007-2008 men, mostly trolls/orcs. Luckily excluding the impulse and battle packs they are in everyset of 2008!

Battle packs are army builders, but sets are for parts. If you really want to army build, wait for sales, clearances or Bricklink.

Actually, it has ten figs...or so I've been told. And it has a dragon.

God bless.

Indeed it does!
2 White Skeletons
2 Archers
2 Soldiers
1 Black Skeleton
1 Speckly Death Knight
1 Crown Knight
1 King

And it has a dragon.

But $10/fig certainly won't get a dedicated army-building heart beating faster, especially for army builders who are interested only in either Crown Knights or Skeletons.
