This house while not castle, makes excellent use of the Sphinx baseplate. http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=69760 Looking at this house, it would be very easy to convert it to a castle house so it is a decent example of what can be done with this baseplate. Old_Republic has a very cool building his wife made on one of these plates. I will have to see if he has pics. It is definitly worth a look if he does have pics.

After a long absence, I have returned. I can't wait to start building again.

Just saw this in that other thread (thanks Jojo), and it is an excellent example of what I was saying.

I like flat since you can do better things with landscaping, but trying to make things with raised ones can be a challenge, and makes you more creative. I would like to get the one in the new World City set, the beach one. Looks like it may mount a nice castle and the cave thingy could make a nice prison.

I have:
2 Ogel Baseplates
1 Baseplate with ramp in Ice Planet theme
1 Baseplate with ramp in Pirate's theme
1 Canyon plate from Extreme Team

Yah its a bit of a challeng.

I have five baseplates.

The ramp one that comes with Fire Breathing Fortress
The one that comes with the biggest Dark Forest, a canyon one.
The one that comes with the biggest aquashark set, its only just raised.
The one that comes with King Leo's castle and another one like it that comes with the Oreint Expition Dragon Fortress one.
I build, therefore I am.

I never use baseplates, so I can,t really vote. My castles are simply too big.
I start building on a 60x120cm (47x23 in) wooden panel, provided with green (grassy) carpet. I have more panels like that in order to make extensions.
Why carpet? Well it looks like grass, but more important, the model cannot move from the panel when I carry it to LEGO shows and the like 8)

I use raised baseplates for scenery, and sometimes I put houses or small towers on them, but I never build real castles on them. But I think that most of the raised baseplates, especially the king leo and dark forest fortess ones, are awesome for small scale battle scenes(which are all I have the figs to do  )

I don't like raised baseplates since they just don't look very lego like, it's more some sort of a plastic bucket underneath a building to make it look bigger, kind of a pedestal.

I also do my own landscaping instead. More consistent in style, more options, and alot more detail.

I have 2 black CRAPPs with craters, 2 green ones with light and dark grey rocks, 1 gray one with dark gray rocks and water pattern, 1 white one with blue ice pattern, 2 light blue canyon plates with underwater pattern, and 12 classic space light grey crater plates (i do like those).

I'd only use the CRAPPs occasionally when attached to one another (4 in a square with a castle on it and small passages between the rocks on the plates would be neat i think :) )
Whatever you do, don't.

I tend to use both. The raised baseplates have always been easy ways to make hills, and castles are often built on hills. These days I try to completely hide the baseplates though, since the style of printing has changed over the years.

I like to use the thick baseplates (that came with Frightknights and Knights Kingdom 1) to make a platform on top of the raised baseplates. There are a lot of parts that are the same height as the raised plate. BURPS and many of the wall pieces are the same height, so it's relatively easy to build a sturdy building surface on top of several raised baseplates next to each other.

I mainly use flat ones and use raised ones to give the terrain substance. I have used raised ones, the sphinx in particular for village buildings. I also used 16 of the raised plates which comes with the KKI castle. I did that to make the castle the same level as the villages, What kind of King would place his castle on the low ground? I have two lego tables at different heights which is why I had to go to such a feat. I did however, figure out how to stabilize and use two of those CRAPP baseplates on top of the other raised plates. Unfortunately, I never got pictures and had to tear it down when we moved.
