I am putting elves in Helms deep. Maybe you haven't seen any of my LOTR work so far but I like to base my stuff on the moives. If this is a problem then... well, maybe you can make a version of helms deep to the books but lets not make this topic turn into another argument like "films are better.. blah.. blah..." then "no, book are better.. blah.. blah"
Can't we like them both?

I am sort of joking, and of course I have seen your excellent work. I just absolutely abhor the addition of the elves in that scene. This is mostly because because I am sort of a book critic for my school, and I have tendency to regard with great anger any variations made on a book in a movie that to me go against what the author was thinking.

I don't think that I would use the grilled helmet. The only thing that defines your orcs as orcs is their head, and that is obscured by the helmet.

Now this is more a matter of taste and source, but I would probably put orcs in something less than a breast plate. They are in plate in the movie because Alan Lee uses watercolor, and watercolor and chain mail simply don't mix. Scale, the unfortunately rare studded leather from Dark Forest, the beat-up samurai padded/leather armor, and the metal disk Fright Knight torso all seem more Orcish. But again, that's a matter of taste and what you have on hand.

Well, I didn't have much choice for the helmet (and I wanted to us Lego parts). The only other helmets I considered using were the neck protector or the chin guard. Although, I guess I could use the broad brim or the ninja style. But it was more the case that I had the face guard helm but not many of the others.

As for the torso, I wanted something I could use to represent an army, which means having the same uniform. Again this came down to the fact that I had quite a few of these breastplate torsos. They look ok to me but maybe I will create a version 2 sometime to try out some other ideas.

As I noted, it can be a simply a matter of what you have on hand. I went through my orc test squad (four figs with the Amorthe Uruk-Hai stickers and a variety of heads) trying out different helmets. The flaired helm ("neck protector") is reasonably appropriate to Tolkien's often ~1000 AD combat. The cut-down bat-wing helmet that I have used on my elves works pretty good - it opens up the face similiar to the new shadow knight semi-barbute. And the samurai helmet gives them an eastern look that was hinted at in Tolkien. I have a boat-load of the new semi-barbute on the way (20 + 25) but I don't have any to actually look at on the figs yet.

After seeing these though, I decided to attempt to make my own Uruk-Hai:


With the helmet issue, to me that helmet looks best. (I tried others.) It reveals the face, but is covering and has a decidedly evil look to it. I believe if you used them instead they would look better - The only problem is the fact that that helmet has a fairly high pricetag still.

Thanks for posting the orcy-guy with the new helmet. Yeah, that's a good look. It has an open enough helmet to show off the orcish face but is a good cross of historical with a hint of fantasy to it to be uniquely orcish.

Agree! That helmet does have an Orc-ish like look to its design.

Well, that's one point for KK2 lol. They did make some cool looking villians and that helm really is great.

Jail's fig is cool. The samurai armor would give the appearance of being somewhat larger than the regular orks if they are compared, and as noted the helmet looks great with the head.

Nice orks, jon_p and Jail. Nothing much to say, except that I'm also going to be using Shadow Knight helms for my goblins (they aren't from Tolkien, so "orks" doesn't apply).

Oh, and about the elves at Helm's Deep:

Since I'm well aware by now that you're doing movie-version, I won't say anthing about the accuracy, since you're well aware of it by now, I imagine. I'll just say that while their arrival made the canonist in my weep buckets, the movie-goer was wowed by them.

Wow, darth maul looks sweet with that helmet on.

I like the use of the "rocket" type piece for the front of the batterying ram, nice castle use for a relatively uncastle piece.

I'm liking the Elves, but I agree about the grilled helmets on the orcs.

Why would the canonist weep?

Movie: Elrond sends some Elves to Aragorn's aid, and they show up at Helm's Deep.

Book: Elrond sends his sons along with some rangers to Aragorn's aid, and they show up a couple days after the battle.

The main difference_ as I see it_ is that due to time constraints the Northern Kingdom is left out of the Movie, so all we see is Elves. Of course they also don't bring him the symbol of his Kingship (Book: The Banner Arwen sewed;Movie: The sword Arwen made Daddy reforge), but that's only because he cut out the whole Arwen at Helm's Deep thing...which would have made me weep.

On personal note I thought it was cool (because) it looked like something out of the Silmarillion.
